hunting feedlots

A woman wants me to hunt a feedlot (horses) for a lost wedding ring. I can't move the Quattro even 2 inches without getting a signal. I haven't used the Quattro much yet, need some help. Tried all metal, and coin-jewelry combo. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

the Quattro can be pretty daunting when you haven't had much experience with it, and the signals and tones can drive you nuts. Where you are detecting, I'm asuming there would be a lot of iron trash, that's if I'm getting it right, and a feedlot is a horse stable over there!!! Haven't heard of the word 'feedlot' before!
Anyway, All Metal Mode might be a bit much for you at this stage, and you're probably starting off in difficult ground to begin with. But, try this. When you turn the detector on, drop your sensitivity down to about 10. Make sur your setting is on High Trash setting for trashy ground. Then noise cancel, holding the detector still, with the coil on the ground, while it does this. I'd go into coin/jewelry mode, and discriminate against iron, from -10 through to +8, and then +40. The reason we're leaving the rest open to hunt with, is that some gold rings can read as low as +9, and we don't know the composition of the ring, wwhether it's 9ct, 14ct, 18ct or how much of the other metals incorporated into the manufactur of the ring it has.
But don't worry about that for now. Just start detecting using even slow sweeps, and grid the area as you go, so you don't miss anything. You still may get a lot of sounds, and if you feel you've got a target under your coil, best to find it, you'll only learn from what you dig. Well, in saying all this, all the best with it. Let us know how you go.
Cheers Golden:)

Thanks, Golden, I'll give that a try. I thought about getting a ring of the same gold Karat, and discriminating out every thing else.Don't know if that would work or not. Thanks again for the reply

Hi Bubber,
One of the most important things that you must make sure of when you do a noise cancel is to make sure there is no targets on the ground when you do a noise cancel. What i do is hold the coil shoulder high completely steady till noise cancel finishes. Another thing i have found that gold rings come in at +7, +8, +10, +11, +13, +14, +17, +18, +19, +20, +23, +30, +34. So i set the discrimination at +6 to start open through to 39 & 40 closed in coin and jewellery mode so you will still get silver items.
Hope this is a help.

Pinpointa, I could be wrong here, and not trying to be a smart alic, but, I think were supposed to use the noise cancel right where were using the detector. What I mean by that is, (and I'm thinking of Andy Sabisch's book here), double check this, but I think we're supposed to scan the ground first where we want to do the noise cancel, then lay the coil on the ground, and then do the noise cancel. I can see your reasoning here, but, the reason, I believe, for keeping it on the ground is so the computer in the detector, can read the "ground matrix" so to speak. I remember Andy talking about doing it once while the detctor was laying on a table, or something, but that was for an air test. I really hope I'm correct here, because I'd never want to mislead anyone. Hope that helps.

Hi beachguy,
If you walk into an area such as the feedlots that bubber is searching
with the ground full of targets you need to do a noise cancel a bit away from that area and shore andy sabisch book does say to put the coil on the ground and check that there is no targets below the coil. But what works for me i see a tree lean it on it and do a noise cancel or if there are no trees around just hold it steady till noise cancel finishes. I never have a problem.

I understand. Your totally right, that you can't do it on a ground with a bunch of targets underneath. Thanks for the info.
