hunting for survey pins

over the weekend had a friend call me and ask if my detector could locate survey pins i said yes it could.i went across lake to his house and fired up the detector.well i dont know about anyone else but im not used to hunting for iron ,usally a tone i ignore so it took some time to get focused on that tone.mean while im getting coin tones and numbers and getting fustrated.finally i hit a coin nice tone and 6 inch depth read as quarter so i said im digging this .turned out to be a 43 washington my friend started laughing ,cause i told him it was a silver quarter.after a half hour of searching i just couldnt locate the pins .so i took a smoke break while standing in the gravel road i look down and see what looks like a survey pin 6 feet away from where he had me searching but in line with where he thought pin was.so i walked down the road 60 feet and found other pin in line with first.than word spreads and another friend who is selling his house asked me to try to locate a pin.fustration again trying to concentrate on iron signals.got a sweet tone and depth so i dug me a hole and out pops a 39 walker.by the way the lake i live on had an old resort on part of it .while buying greyghost headphones from gary of detector pro .his shop is in a town i grew up near.well filled out my warranty card he asks where my adress is never heard of the town well i mention the lake he smiles and says i know where that is about 8 yrs ago he did a dive off where the boat and swim docks were at the resort and scored big he said.i proceeded to curse him and laugh saying i knew there was stuff in the water over there

I've been asked to search for pins and like you say you have to listen for iron, instead of ignore it. I've been able to find stakes dozens of times but sure helps if they can get you pretty close to the lot line. And every now and then it is a master pin, which is often brass.

Nice finds. I've found property markers too. It helps to find the first one and then work your way off that pin. Using a small coil helps and it also helps if you have a pinpointer which will better locate the pin once you're in the general area. Like you did, this is a good way to come across new detecting sites. HH
