Hunting huge park.Where to start.

Hunting a huge old park you can see it on Bing Maps 'Snyder Park' in Springfield Ohio.Been here since the 1890's and has alot of history. It used to be a beautiful park but during the 1960's it started going down.Anyway me and the T-Vaq have not even put a small dent in this huge park and hundreds and thousands gather here every year since the 1890's.I would say 95% of my finds are pull tabs and I have hunted here for over a year and being honest I could hunt here every week for the next 5 years and still not get to all the park.If someone gets a chance look at the park and tell me how you would go about attacking this monster park.Thank for your suggestions.:)[/sup][/i]

You finding loads of clad? If so, concentrate on finding jewelry too...go after the foil and tab and strange signals up to and just below zincs...find the "Lanes"
in that park...the places people sit in the shade, and whatnot...the clad will tell you where they are...theres probably a few others hunting it, but who cares? go after those really strange signals and maybe even set a goal for finding 1000 pulltabs and 1000 pennys...a few could turn into a gold ring in an area of that size and age, you know dang well theres gold in there.....this truly is a thinking game in a park that big...you gotta think about the travel habits and patterns of people! Your detector will let you know if you are thinking right or not..
Mud

Mud is right. There are gold rings still hiding in the ground as long as you're still digging tabs and clad no matter how many people have hunted that park.

Every time I dig a pull tab, I know I'm on the right track.:)

tabman

I don't dig alot of clad some pennies and nickels every now and then but guaranteed every swing you will be getting another pulltab. You guys are right though,i know there is good stuff in here just seem so overwhelmng at times because of the size of the park I know they used to walk in the past and where they used to sit and play and picnic ect.Definitely takes patience, took me an hour just to do a strip and only found pulltabs..:surprised: Found 15 in just one hole yesterday but at the bottom was an old button from the 1920's so gotta dig those tabs.Thank you for the advice I appreciate it very much.

Stop, look around, decide where the last place you would want to swing, and go there first. That's what I do! I have found many silver rings, 1 gold ring, several silver coins, and lots of other cool stuff where no one else wants to swing.

Just a thought I look at large trees with low hanging limbs and search slowly under them as well and around them also Lots of love sick fellows use tohang upside down to impress thier beauties might be some nice silver lurking just under those limbs and who knows maybe a lost gold engagement ring

Great imput my fellow detectorists ! It never ceases to amaze me, I have been detecting since I was 15 years old now I am 42, and you can never stop learning new ways of doing things or the ideas that others have that will help you.Thank You all.

do you want me to come up and dig all the pull-tabs out?You do have to get them out to find all the rings, but if it is that bad pick one small area and hunt at max dis. with a smaller coil then next time hunt the same area at lower dis then hunt it aging at min dis take your time.Try to find older dirt not where they may have filed in.

Mr. Pulltaber you are more than welcome to take a section of the park and dig some up for yourself not for me,I can do that myself just was looking for a different approach.Have the 5.75 coil and the older dirt its just the past 100 years of trash on top of it.:)

Just wondering have you hit by the waterway yet??I mean from the bridge all the way down to main(Right and left side). That's where the most activity would have taken place back in the day. Picnics, just sitting by the water with your girl Boating just taking a stroll and letting the kids play.

I really do not mind diging them out for you,can I keep all of the rings that I find with them ?When I first stared back in the 70's all the old timers told me then that there was nothing left to find,so I started to follow behind them and slow down then stared find what they left I am glad to say they were worng , it is hard to find a park that old that has not been hunted to death, slow down and enjoy it .

I have not tried there yet bewhole but I will try there. The entire park is filled with ponds and a major creek runs through the park that the Indians called 'Buck Creek'.The park has many shelter houses and the original Boat House and Rest House that you see in the pictures are still there. It has about 3 bridges in it.Not too many people are into Metal Detecting here...I think I need to just put some blind guides on and stay focused on one section at a time because from all the photos you see where all the people used to hang out just so many places to go.

Hi Toddy T vac, You have a really great old park that has plenty of history with plenty of opportunity for some really great finds, so take it a step further and see if your research can give you an even earlier time in history "before" the park, prior to 1890's You may be surprized/pleased at what you may find, then maybe not, but I would do it for the extra history aspect..Take it back to it's earliest human activity/history. You may could combine that info with your Park history(hot spots) for an even better understanding of your "find" potential, thus keeping your detecting senses tweaked sharp and tuned for some possible greater finds than those to do with Park activity. You lookin at a winner however you look at it! HH, Charlie. .

Thanks Fowlercharles you bet I will HH!

NOW you can see why people have 2 machines-or more. For an example, I would take my Ace or Royal Sabre in coins/notch modes first and cherry pick. SOME rings will hit in the nickel/foil region. Then, I would go to tone/meter ID and listen to the SOUNDS of the trash-SOME tabs/rings would sound really different-the tabs being a little jumpy. The Royal Sabre, even in tones mode has some tonal characteristics that are noticeable and the Ace has long/short hits for different targets. Then, after KEEPING NOTES of locations of the highest concentration of coins, rings, valuables,,, I would go to those areas for beep/dig. It's simply a matter of keeping it enjoyable which keeps your attitude good.
