Hunting in the rain

Are there any worries hunting in the rain with the Explorer as long as the control box has a (Minelab factory) cover on it? I know with the X-1 probe the switch box needs to be covered. But just wondering about water getting in the machine.
Thanks.
Chip

Hi Chip,

I don't like to hunt in the rain, but sometimes you do get caught in it and if the detecting is good you hate to pack up and leave. Do use your dust/rain cover and what I did on my X-1 switch box is I ran a bead of clear caulking around the top of the switch box where it connects to the shaft. If the little rubber boot on your switch is in good condition then you shouldn't have any problems. Hope this helps a little bit and GL & HH in the rain.

Not if you have a rain jacket. Just ordered one from Ralph at SunRay, only $15.00 The probe box you'll need to cover with a bag.

That's why I also have an excalibur. In Oregon it rains too much!

Swinging in the Rain can be a pretty messy affair. Needs to be extenuating circumstances (like I've driven a long ways) in order for me to do it. Trying to keep the detector dry and out of the mud can be a problem. And keeping one's hands and everything they touch free of mud is trouble as well. Everything gets mucky making for a lot of cleaning up.

And trying not to leave a muddy mess behind is trouble as well if you're hunting a private yard, park or school lawn.

Light drizzle is okay but wouldn't hunt in solid rain. just my opinion bud.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't really plan to hunt in the rain, but the weather is changing here and I got a late start this year. If it is half way decent out I don't want the rain to stop me.
I don't plan to hunt in downpours. Does anyone know if the Minelab version of the control box cover is water proof? It looks like it could be by the material it is made of.

Hey Chip....Cool name.
I don't think the "environmental" cover is meant to be waterproof, I've used mine in light rain but I usually call it quits when I have to continually wipe the screen off with my shirt sleeve.

you can hunt in Neagara rain with no problem, but you have to cover phone jack and all plastic handle conections with tape and sunray probe too, with coil conector. Some time I hunt in rain and snow, what we usual have hear in Lithuania closer to winter. first good boots and goretex jacket with trousers and taped like Tutankhamun mummy explorer

I hadn't thought about covering the jack in the back. That is a good idea. I bet. Sounds like you would have a short season otherwise.
