You did not say what part of New England you were going to be visiting or what type of hunting you were going to do; i.e., beach hunting, coin hunting, relci hunting, prospecting, etc. which would affect the answers you receive.
There are rules which can impact what you do or do not do and they depend on the state and type of hunting you want to do.
I would offer the following two contacts for you to start with. They are both well-versed with the rules in their areas of New England and if they do not have a ready answer, can point you in the right direction.
1) Sondra Bernzweig - Detector Electronics: They are in the Boston area and can be reached at (50:geek: 626-0244.
2) George Streeter - Streeters Treasure Hunting Supply: He is an avid hunter in New Hampshire and travels across New England doing all types of hunting. He can be reached at (603) 357-0607.
If you need any additional information on specific areas / sites, feel free to drop me an E-mail as I have done a good deal of hunting in that area over the years.
Hope this helps

As far as Maine and New hampshire goes detecting is not regulated that much on a state level other than no hunting in federal areas.
local governments like cities may have some restrictions. Beaches aremostly wide open unless they are federal. No National seashores to worry about.
Maine protects cemetreies also but I never hunt them anyway.
Overall it is open but State and Federal parks have restrictions as usual in any area.
There are no wierd antiquity laws here like in some states such as Arizona where you cannot hunt for relics...go figure...but youcan sure tear up the mountain side digging gold.
Best bet is to hook up with someone local as almost all spots that are obvious have been hammered.
