Nah, I'll keep my minelabs, but that sure was one hell a find.

awesome find for sure. In half frozen ground no less.HH EV

If I had found Spanish Gold today I can pretty much guarantee I would have posted a close up after cleaning the dirt, and would likely have done so in my original post. Maybe it's just me, or the way the picture came out, but it doesn't look like any hammered gold coin I have seen on the net. If it's real it's one of the most impressive finds I have seen posted this year.

it looks like a repro to me. It's too shiny and it looks too brand new to me. But hey I could be wrong.

if hes digging gold coins at 16 inches <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Its as fake as they come, I ahve seen gold coins dug before, and even gold from the mint are not shiney like that, and the simple fact he says it was 16 inches deep(impossible to get that deep for a modern fake) makes me know he is aware its fake, add the fact his neighbor took the pic while he was in the field and still had loose dirt on it? where did he come from? He was out in the field yelling for his neighbor to come out and take a pic? And no doubt there would be a closeup cleaned even from his scanner.. perhaps he doesnt want that word copy to show through with the dirt cleaned off. And one last thing, while even though gold does clean up nicely. a gold coin in the ground for 200 plus years will still have dirt hardened in the crevices that needs to be cleaned out when first pulled from the ground, I know mine did.. this looks like a bit of mud was thrown on it for a pic... And 16 inches deep? And seagoers had so much gold and silver they used it to throw at crows? Oh man any one who falls for this one..
I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but this one there is no doubt... And no I wouldnt believe it if he was using a minelab either <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Excellent post too many negatives to be a truism..Thanks for your insight...

Come on now Jim, what would a hammered gold coin story be with digging a 16" hole? <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
