I have 2 - X 70 questions

Which of the 3 stock coils, 3k, 7k, 18k, will go the deepest for relic hunting? I am going to hunt a place that the easy targets are gone, and havn't had a lot of hours behind my X70 yet.
Question 2, I did a search for the answer to my question and I did not find it, but I did read someone say that the am mode gets the deepest, I have never hunted in all metal mode, and was wondering if anyone could give me a detailed lesson on the all metal mode? I would be be deeply great full if some of you folks could give me your opion.
Thanks Greg

#1 is a loaded question at best! Typically the lower frequency coils will often go deeper but it's really site dependent more than anything else and also depends on what you are hunting for. The 7.5 is probably the most used overall and I would be hard pressed to say the 3 is any deeper except when running in beach mode ... then you will see about a 1" or maybe a tad bit more increase in depth and I have NO explanation for it either .. it just does ! Blame it on the V-Flex or prove it ain't so I say :)
In a perfect world we would all have the same kind of dirt composition on our sites but that isn't how it is, so, for sure your dirt/hunt sites will be different from mine and most other out-of-town hunters, make sense ? What may work great for you may not for others and vice-versa. Simple really, different coils for different soils.

Question #2 is pretty EASY when it comes down to the X-Terra. The all metal mode is basically just zero discrimination ( all metals accepted) and you can take any of the 3 patterns modes and remove the notches and get the exact same results as the dedicated all metal mode. Or ... you can set all the patterns just a few notches different and have like 4 different machines in your hand by just pushing a button. Lot's of scenarios here, especially with the 70.
Deeper in all metal mode ? Well that all depends on WHO you ask but typically on MOST detectors .... as you turn up the discrimination scale you will lose depth ... however, I have NOT seen a depth loss on the X-Terra even when using heavy disc, they just don't seem to be affected, others may disagree. Maybe another V-Flex thing. Whatever it is ... I like it :twodetecting::twodetecting::twodetecting:

Hi Greg,

Ill answer your second question as Ive stuck with the stock coil so far and havent tried my others yet.

I only use the all metal mode, I think there is less chance of masking something. I dont mind the extra amount of signals this produces.
What I do is turn the 70 on, get over some clear ground and hit the menu button and do a noise cancel, holding the coil motionless slightly off the soil. once your at noise cancel press the mode auto button and it will do this automatically. When it finishes, it will sound off and select a number. Then press detect.
Then I press the ground balance button and then the mode auto button again and let the detector read the ground and set itself up. After its done I press detect again and then menu one more time. I select my sensitivity and then press detect again and away I go. I like the four tones myself when beach hunting.
Hope this helps,
Neil

when he said the answer is mostly site dependent. One thing for sure about the 3 Khz coil is that it loves jar lids. I used it at site I have been hunting for 4 years with every detector I have owned and dug 5 or 6 within the first 20 feet. They read within 2 numbers of each other so I finally just quit digging them to save time. Now how did all those other detectors not see them? Hmmm...

I don't consider a site worked out unless I have hunted it with several machines and coil combinations. In the short time I have used it the 3 Khz coil has gotten some silver.

I know that there is only one way to answer question 1 and that is by spending a lot of hours behind the machine! It has took me about 3 years to learn that no matter what detector you hunt with it is how well you know it. And I ask because I knew that I would get honest answers on here! I don't post much, havn't had much time this summer to be on line, I have read where Monte was going to write a book on the X70, or I think That is what I read. I just wished I had 3 or 4 hours a day to hunt with the X70 so I could learn it better, the bad thing is that I have to drive 70 miles to relic hunt and just can't afford to do that every week. Thanks so much for the help!!
H.H. To All
