HOT ROCK: A rock that contains a higher or significantly different concentration of non conductive ground mineral than the surrounding ground to which the detector is balanced.

sometimes deeper targets are identified as hot rocks too, so we have to be aware

"Hot rocks and coldstones" Yep out in the gold fields they are a problem. Usually though it is not hard to figure'em out. 90% of them are at the surface and will be a dark color. I usually will push what I think is making the buzz box hum away with my foot , check the spot it was at then hit the rock again. The VDI is just piece of information. Many x's you start digging one and then it is gone. It was a concetration of ferrite or some other "hot" mineral. When nugget hunting don't walk away from it until you are fairly certain what made the detector go off.
