I have heard here that the explorer is not good on Gold?

I,ve not had trouble with nickles, in fact I found a Buffalo and War the same day with the 8" coil. Can't say about bronze but it seems enough people find enough gold jewelery to make you a believer.
But if you just want gold and especially the small stuff there are better choices.

The detector is good for Gold Rings and Jewelry and Coins. It just depends on the luck you are having and if you are digging all the targets you come across. Gold has too many different readings due to different Karats and Sizes to be consistent to a specified tone or number ID. If you are talking about small gold nuggets then the Explorer would probably have a problem since they usually are quite small and then you would need a Gold Detector to find these items. The detector is good for Nickels and Bronze coins as well. I have found numerous Cash Coins with my Explorer XS and other finds as well as Shield,V-Nickels,Buffalo's,Jefferson's and even the War Nickels. The person just needs to know what to look for between the tones and display readouts. But most part is by tones. Just have to take some time and learn them and you will soon see that the Explorer is good for all the above mentioned except the smaller gold items. Hope this helps you out.

Its not bad on gold but on the other hand its not the most sensitive machine around on nickels and gold rings. The dfx is in my personal opinion better on gold jewellry than the explorer series. On the other hand i am also in no doubt that the explorer series is much hotter on silver than most other machines. On sites loaded with foil and trash the explorer is the best machine in the world easy. For nickels and gold rings buy a DFX E- SEREIES.

The Explorer/Quattro is excellent on most medium size to nickels, small gold rings, earrings etc.

The Sovereign BBS circuit seems to have a bit better signal/depth on the smaller rings, particularly the Sovereign GT, but they are close.
The very small shards of aluminum, foil are also ignored and the silky smooth circuit (less noise) also allows one to hear a 'good signal response, however slight, since the audio thresholds on Minelabs run so smooth and they enjoy magnetic power line noise reduction on their start ups.

On thin band and gold chains w/o big pendants attached, the 1.5 kHz FBS circuit just won't respond to these targets with any signal.

The CHAMP as I see it is the Tesoro Tejon @ 17.5 kHz, with honorable mention to the White's MXT/M6 DFX (15kHz selected), Tesoro Cibola, Vaquero, Compadre, & Tiger Shark).

I've tried the Fisher CZ Series which are dual freak units.... they don't respond to my smaller gold jewelry chain samples in spite of incorporating a higher frequency like the DFX, but unable to select that higher frequency alone, so the voltage is split.

I've had very good luck finding nickels with my XS, I,ve pulled in 2 V's and 4 Buffalo's this year as well as numerous Jeffersons. It's all in the tones, there is a distinctive sound to a nickel, sometimes you get fooled by a pulltab, but generaly you know when it is a nickel.
Last spring I was at a Park that I'd hunted several times with my XLT, and pulled 26 nickels at varying depths, I've yet to find any gold but I,m sure if I go over it that the Explorer will give me a tone.

i would disagree with anyone who says the explorer is bad with nickles . i have found more nickles in a week then i fould all last year with my old machine. and a sweet "V" to boot my first "v" in a area which has been pounded by all types of MD's. i would know its my yard. read out and tones, mostly tones . learn them live them love them and your finds will increase
