...a lot of sand, dirt and/or water can get in between it and the coil - most I've seen inside any cover. Much of it will drop (pour) out when carrying or tilting the X-terra, so if you own one, be careful inside your wife's house. Those little trails and piles of dirt could get you into big trouble.
Actually, I permanently remove the coil cover if I decide I'm going to keep a detector. I got in the "no cover" habit a long time ago when a detector I owned started acting up. I removed the coil cover and found quite a bit of magnetic black sand and some saltwater inside from surf wading. That was the problem - removing the frisbee fixed it. With the X-Terra's cover removed and not collecting sand and dirt, there will be 2.5 ounces less coil weight too. Yes, my coils get scratched and dinged up a bit, but I haven't killed one yet.<br>
