I have no idea what this is or where I found it but I know it was in some Michigan Lake, probably up north.
It is about 7.5 inches long and the first view is the front-I think and the second the opposite.

Royal,I believe this is a tooth off an old farm implement.I can't remember what it is called but it has a roll of teeth similar to this and was pulled by horses across fields to remove sod.

it in a farm field, near Fowlerville Mi. Thanks

I'm old enough to have seen even the old horse drawn sickle mowers used regularly .

I was little, probably about 9 or 10. Someone had to raise the bar to clear obstacles. Actually as heavy as the sickle bar assembly looks it was easy to trip and raise. During the first cutting you would see lots of young of the year. Once in a while one wasn't quite quick enough in getting out of the way.
I've dug quite a few broken off or discarded cutting edges but never a guard like you found.

...did we discuss benefits?

... but I rode a mower when I was a kid, working on a Wisconsin farm in the summer. If my recollection is correct, the blades were more trangular, and had serrated edges. Maybe I'm mixing them up with sharks teeth.
Anyway, I do remember quite vividly, getting stung by hundreds of bees, as they flew up out of the clover and alfalfa. Ouch!
