I need some advice

Hello, Coinguy here, I was out using my new Garrett Ace 250 and I keep getting signals and once I dig it says 2 inches. And then it goes to 6 to 8 inches. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I get a target and I can't ever find it, thinking about buying a pinpointer (probably a Garrett pro pointer). I swing the coil over the target and I hold down the pinpoint button and I start to dig once the sound gets the loudest and I never find it so I give up. But I have found some coins, just clad in my own yard. But once I get to the deeper targets, it gets 10X harder getting the target

I find a Pro-Pointer EXTREMELY useful for deeper targets. I use on almost every target, though.

When you are new, it is difficult to translate what your detector is saying to you. When I was a newbie I dug tons of deep cans. Sometimes as many as 10 in a single day. Now I rarely dig one. You will learn to tell. Many times those deep signals are large junk. Sometimes they are old coins. It takes practice. Figure on around 100 solid hours to become decent. You will find lots of loot in that 100 hours. Possibly 1000s of clad coins along with silver and gold jewelry if you're persistent. Accurate pinpointing takes practice too. Once you master it you will be loads better. Watch this video by Khouse. It will make you a better detector.

Practice! (Have I said that before?)

Totally agree with chris's post. You sound just like me about a year ago just after I got my ACE 250. Pratice is key, i also got the propointer and it has helped me cut down my recovery time to about 1 minute!! Hang in there!

Thanks guys, I watched the video and he made it look too easy. I'll try again tomorrow; I went to some old places today and found nothing because I was not real good with it. I'm buying a Garrett Pro Pointer for all the time MD'ing. Also has anyone had any targets where it goes back and forth like: 1 cent then 25 cents then 50 cents and back to 1 cent and then pulltab or iron?
thanks again for your help :garrett:

Yes. Yes. Yes. Sometimes those jumpy targets are goodies like deep silver coins. Many times they are junk like a can or a rusty old nail. Practice pinpointing. The better you get it, the better your target analysis will get. The Pro-Pointer is worth twice the cost. Seriously.

First turn your sensitivity down to 4 and leave it there. Hunt in coins mode. Pinpointing with the 250 is tricky. Center your target side to side then drag the coil straight back towards you until the instant the signal stops. On shallow targets the target will be under the front center tip of the inside loop on your coil. Deeper targets will be a little further back from that point. It takes a little practice. Correctly centering your target is crucial for accurate readings. You can't get sloppy. Slow down and take your time. Watch the signal strength indicator when centering your target. When the cursors on the top of the display line up all the way across you have centered the target and it will be where I described.

Get some coins and tape them to a piece of cardboard several inches apart then turn the cardboard over ona surface with no metal under it the practice pinpointing the coins. Use something sharp to poke thru the cardboard to see if you have pinpointed correctly.

Thanks Uncle Willy, I'll have to try that setup. Right now it has been raining all day and I have not yet to get a chance to swing the coil some. But for sure I will try this in a few days when it dries up
thanks
