people just say things are very deep when using the Aquastar and not give the depth in inches!!!! On Sunday Houndawgg an avid Aquastar user and myself got together for some lake hunting. We met at a lake that I know from past experience has deep coins and rings. Most were now out of range of most water current VLF machines. I was using a land type gold detector that could discriminate and that excels at finding small pieces of gold like chains and earrings. The lake we were hunting gets hits very hard by water hunters every year and this year was no exception. Our only hope of finding anything would be to find small gold that most machines can't see or really deep targets that were beyond the range of most water machines. We seemed to have both bases covered <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> I'll try to keep this shorter than my normal Posts as I do seem to get long winded at time <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Anyway I found a few pices of gold with my machine and and Houndawgg dug a few deep bobby pins and a couple of gold earrings. It was slow hunting for sure but it was a beautiful sunny day of about 80 degrees and the lake was clear and the surface calm and the water temp was in the mid 70's. You couldn't ask for a nicer day to be water hunting. After about 2 hours of hunting Houndawgg asked if I would like to try the Aquastar...well he didn't have to ask twice <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> We switched detectors and gave each other advice on the operation of each others machines. He had set the internal controls of the Aquastar for the most depth and Sensitivity. SAT was at minimum, Power was at it's highest setting. The Delay was set at 10us and the freguency was set in the middle (I don't remember the number). I had hunted with Pulse units in the past so I had a good idea of what I was listening for. I set the Threshold so I could just hear a low steady tone. The first two targets I dug were strong signals and turned out to be bobby pins that the discriminator gang had left behind <IMG SRC="/forums/images/frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":("> I didn't want to dig bobby pins during the time I was going to have with the Aquastar so I decided to only dig faint signals. My next few targets turned out to be deep bobby pins and a few steel shot. I was impressed with how small of targets the Aquastar can detect!!! The pulses I had used in the past could not detect such small targets and I liked the much quicker response of the Aquastar compared to pulse units I ahd used years ago. After digging the steel shot I decided to rethink my strategy again. I opted for digging very weak and wider signals. Leaving all loud signals and faint narrow signals behind. My first signal of the faint wider type was what I would consider a deep nickel on the order of 12-14 inches.(3 scoops) The next target of this type was a bracelet about 9-10 inches deep.(2 Scoops) I was happy I was finding things other than bobby pins <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> My next deep signal was another nickel. This one was deeper than the first nickel and was about 14-16 inches down. ( 4scoops) I was really getting impressed at the depths the Aquastar can reach.

When I recieved my next deep wide signal and started to dig I thought it was going to be a deep nickel but as I whenI reached my 5th scoop of sand and stone and still hadn't reached it I was beginning to think beer can <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> When I put the coil down in the deep hole I had excavated the detector was screaming at me so I knew I was getting close. Another deep scoop and I still didn't have the target. The detector was really lound when I placed the coil down in the hole. I was thinking this is a large targetreally deep and I was almost ready to give up. But luckily I didn't. I took out one more really deep scoop of sand and checked the hole. Thankfully the target was gone from the hole <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> I had worked up a sweat digging this target <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

This is what that target turned out to be. A 14K mans wedding ring. The Aquastar goes really deep for rings and I suspect that it goes deeper for rings than it does for coins since the deepest nickel that I dug had roughly the same signal strength as this ring did which was much deeper although maybe the coin wasn't laying exactly flat. Either way the ring was 7 scoops down using a scoop that digs deep. Taking into consideration sand sliding back into the hole I would concservatively say that this ring was at least 20 inches down and probably deeper. I am 6 feet tall and was in slightly less than waist deep water and when I stepped down into the hole after retrieving the target I was in water up to my chin. Since I had such a deep hole open I decided to put the coil down in the hole and turn it on edge and scan the sides of the hole. Sure enough about a foot down the Aquastar indicated a target off to the side so I excavated sideways and found this:

I have never seen a ring like this one so I have no idea how old it is but it is unique and I enjoy finding unique items almost as much as I enjoy finding gold <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
At this point I decided I should give Houndawgg his Aquastar back as I felt a bit bad that I had found such a nice ring while using his machine. Luckily he had found a few small pieces of gold while using my machine.
I am truly impressed with the Aquastar's performance and I only used for about two hours!!!! I am also happy to know that I was right about there being deep rings and coins in this particular lake that are well beyond most water machines. Hopefully Houndawgg will go back to this lake again and find that deep old Class Ring that he was hoping to find yesterday as they have to be there and if anything can find them it will be the Aquastar!!!!

I use the Beachscan MKII and have learned that when the signal is a soft sound (deep) to automaticlly take out three scoops before rechecking the hole, this is on wet sand and not underwater. Sometimes Im fooled and its a small earring or charm and was in the first of second scoop, but most of the time its just deep and the third or forth scoop will get it out of the hole. I still see people digging with hand scoops in the wet sand. They are either A. In better shape then me or B. Not digging up targets as deep as I'am. Can you imagine trying to dig up a 15" nickel or rings with a hand scoop? That would make for a long day!
 
What you posted about the Aquastar is pretty much my experience with my Deepstar - Deep on nickels and gold.
Eric, you've unleashed some beasts! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Now, if we could only stop the sand from caving in the hole, it would be a lot easier to get those deep rings out <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
 
The Aquastar, Deepstar, Goldquest SS, and the Beachscan II really were tuned for maximum response toward gold jewelry. The Goldquest SS does a real good job on nuggets also.
Because of this tuning, the response toward clad coins is not as strong. I would just hate to have a quarter responding real loud at 2
 
When I first started posting my results with the Aquastar II, I didn't think people were believing what I said. When you think about it, unless you are there, it is kinda hard to believe

I will admit that ring was the deepest I have ever had to dig to retrieve a target that size!!! Up until now I have only had to go that deep for beer and soda cans <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> I don't even want to think about how deep the Aquastar can detect those!!!

Houndawgg found a Gold Post Earring with one of those large fake diamonds in it while he was usnig my detector. We checked it with teh Aquastar and it could also detect it. I was surprised even though I had read that the Aquastar could detect small gold since the PI's I had used years ago would never have been able to see such a small gold target!!! I also know what you mean about the people with the hand scoops. I see them all the time on the beach. They have top of the line detectors capable getting coin a foot down or more and they are digging with a hand scoop. It's sometimes hard to get to a target with a long handled scoop let alone a hand scoop!!!!

Went to the beach today and took the Aquastar and my Excalibur. Now don't get this wrong - I love my Excalibur, but ....
The difference in depth as I can describe it is:
Using the Excalibur today, all my targets were retrieved with one scoop (using an 11" deep scoop)
Using the Aquastar today: some targets retrieved with one scoop and some with 2 scoops, but on average 3-4 scoops were needed. Granted some caving in took place, but this practical look kinda tells the tape.

its hard to tell how deep you dig unless your carying around a measuring sstick yesterday at the beaches down south i got a small sound knew it was a deep one and dug down about 2 and a half feet for garden troull (hand scooper ) i think it all depends on the beaches the ones with the big grainny sand i can go rediculoisly deep the harder small packed sand not as deep and the minerals play alot into this equation some days im digging nickles at 13 inches orther days differnt beaches 15 to 16 inches so when somebody askes how deep does it go it all dependes on the conditions and to top it all off the aquastar is way more power wow thats alot of digging larry ca
 
The GoldQuest SS PI Detector is very impressive!
