At a 100 year old park, at the entrance and also near parking with a 100 years of trash, dense trash, everywhere.
Also an area with some of the most EMI problems I have ever had at any park before.
I have been successful at pulling out coins from this area before with my F70 and the big DD coil.
Not only shallow clad, but once an Indian Head coin spill was found at 7" a bit closer to the street and that time I was using 4h, sense about 80, -1 on the thresh, DE speed, disc was probably at 4 or under.
Pretty jumpy I remember, 50's to some flashes of 80's. but there were 3 IH's and one 1915 wheatie that accounted for some of that and the spill was spread out over about a one foot area.
I recall that the EMI was not making things easy at all on that one, still had all kinds of falsing.
Another time in the same area I used a different method, sense and thresh were about the same, also DE speed, but I turned the disc up to the mid 20's and used DP tones on that one, found a merc that time that was only a couple inches deep.
Pretty easy, actually, less noisy than the IH spill settings but I do remember there was still a bit of jumping around and some falsing going on from that same EMI.
Today I hit the area again. it is right next to where I always park my truck so I always hunt this a bit before I move to other parts of the park.
This time I was using 1 tone, sense was on 90, thresh at -2, disc on 25, and this time SL speed.
Couldn't believe it...this thing was quiet!
Ok, not perfectly quiet, still a tiny little false tone here and there, mostly the high kind and obvious because they were just little flashes and squeaks, but overall this thing was running way quieter than I have ever seen it run at this area of the park.
And remember this was on 90 sense and SL speed, hotter than I had ever had it before.
I got a nice solid tone and low 70's on the screen, maybe a 3 number jump when I dialed it in, and that turned out to be a large Chrysler key.
I got a million more signals as I moved on, too jumpy and couldn't tame them down so I knew they were trash, and came across a pretty solid tone and a 3 number jump again in the low 70s.
I pulled back the coil and rimmed the front end looking for a drop to iron and didn't see it so I didn't suspect a pop top so I dug it...and it was a pop top.
I had forgotten my disc was set higher than usual and couldn't see the drop so on this one I fooled myself.
A few feet further on I got anther nice signal, this time jumping from about 79-81 and a good solid tone.
Checking it out from another direction the same thing, and this time I remembered switching to all metal on program two to rim the thing and look for a drop to iron and there was none.
6" was the depth reading, I couldn't ask for a more classic signal to dig and hope for an old coin so I did and from just about 6" down I pulled out this little beauty.
This 1 tone setting is something I am really getting to love for several reasons.
It goes deep, it seems to be the quietest tone choice I have used so far, and I have been using it at all different kinds of sites for the last several weeks.
Also it is the most responsive setting I have learned to interpret so far in as far as no matter how close trash is to any target I still seem to be able to notice the better target...or I think/hope I am most of the time.
I have used it in the woods, in a ridiculous heavy iron infested site and at several trashed out park areas and now at this one with 100 years of trash build up and I have been successful pulling out great targets at all of them.
I have set the sense low, high and in between, and the thresh from -2 to 9, and I have managed to find combinations at all sites to make this thing run relatively quiet...even on higher settings.
This might eventually be the favorite tone setting choice for me.
More hunting time will tell.
