i sent my faulty delta coil to hector today - i need

a replacment for it

looking comments on the omega stock coil for the delta. anyone added or used the 10" coil on delta?

thanks

I just got the 11 inch DD today and put it on the delta and tried it out in the front yard, boy does it cover a larger area, will see how it does on the beach this weekend, maybe sooner if I can get to it before sundown, working strange hours this week and don't know when or if I will be hunting until the weekend. Any advice about using this 11 incher? Like settings etc. Monte? Or others any advice to lessen the learning curve would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mike

Screw caps ring as high tones and you will dig more of them. Check out Monte's EPR ans Easy Out techniques if you aren't aware of them as they will save you a lot of digging. Practice pinpointing on a known target to see where on your coil it will pin point. These are the biggest differences I can think of off hand. Good luck and enjoy your new coil!

Yes, I have used all four of the available coils on the Delta, and, of them all, I have my personal opinions based on my hunting needs and sites. The Delta is a very good detector but I have to keep in mind that while I like mine, it is still a 'basic' detector. Not as versatile as several that I use most of the time.

By 'basic' I am referring to the fact that it does have the saturated audio response, which is good for many uses, but it also has the 3-tone audio ID. I have found that multi-tone ID, on any model, seems to appeal to many hobbyists or more casual hunters who like the Tone ID to help them locate coins, as a rule.

I prefer to use either a 1 or 2 tone audio, with the 2nd tone being a low bass-like audio for typical iron. I also like the more familiar audio response of a single or dual tone audio that is more modulated as it provides more audio target signature, especially in the multi-target (trashy) sites I usually hunt.

For the Teknetics models that I find more appealing for some 'serious' hunting, which include the Gamma, Omega, G2 and T2, I might use the 1 or 2 tone audio response. Since I usually hunt trashier sites I actually like the 5" DD most of the time, and my 2nd favorite search coil is the elliptical 10" concentric coil, standard on the Omega, but a great optional accessory. Why is the 10" elliptical a #2 favorite for me? Because when I move out of the trashier areas it might still be moderately junky and the narrower field and quick response still handle close targets rather well.

Yes, the 11" DD might have a tighter pattern, but in trashy locations with more shallower targets, the DD design needs a bit more coil height in order to not have the back-reading response from close targets. The elliptical 10" does rather well. Also, the concentric design can provide a little better discrimination in some trashy situations. Due to the useful work in trashy ares but also providing good ground coverage and depth in the more open areas, the 10" elliptical concentric is my #2 favorite coil. I am mainly referring to the Gamma and Omega which have the 1 and 2 Tone ID options as well as Ground Balance capability.

On the Delta, of all four search coils, I also consider how others will like their performance and have let people use the Delta with all the coils to give me some feedback of their impressions. From the 'average' hobbyists, not the more experienced and savvy detectorists, the most popular search coil of the four was the stock 8" concentric. Why? Because they liked the 'feel ' of the detector with it and it had a more 'normal' appearance to them. The main reason, however, was that they found it much easier to Pinpoint with the 8" coil.

The 2nd coil the less-experienced typical hobbyists favored was the 5" DD. Why? Because it was easy to work it in the trash and, even though it is a round DD design, they could Pinpoint fairly easily due to the small size. The 10" elliptical concentric and 11" elliptical DD coils were about tied for 3rd place and the main reason was because they had a more difficult time trying to Pinpoint targets.

I like to grab the Delta for quick hunts in typical wood-chip and sand-filled playgrounds. If I hunt a more questionable neighborhood I also like to hang onto a lower-value model when hunting alone ... just in case. It works okay there, too. Because I have other models equipped with coils I feel fit different applications, such as the 5" DD mounted on the G2 and the 10" DD for the Omega, I usually just keep the stock 8" concentric coil on the Delta and Omega. They work fine.

If I were you and out hunting beaches a lot, the coil I would use as 'back-op' on the Delta would be the 10" elliptical DD. Pinpointing skill isn't such a need on a beach where scooping and digging are easier, and the coil will provide good coverage and target response.

Well, a 'learning curve' that most people face when using a larger-size coil on a more 'basic' model, like the Delta, is knowing that shallower targets, within 2"-3" of the search coil, can cause a back-reading or multi-hit response that can be confusing. Many quickly interpret this as a trash target response. So, when this happens, make sure you raise the search coil another inch or two when re-sweeping the target.

Also, due to the dynamics of the D-D configuration, some Discrimination characteristics aren't as good as a concentric design. Then there is the fact that a target response (audio and visual) might fluctuate a bit more between a left-to-right and right-to-left sweep over a uniform target (such as a coin laying flat) depending upon the depth.

Yes, the 11" BiAxial DD coil can give you a bit more coverage, but if you are used to using the stock 8" round concentric coil and have pinpointing down to a science with it, you might have a little longer 'learning curve' with the lengthy DD coil. While I am not the biggest fan of larger coils, especially larger Double-D designs, I have to say the Teknetics' 11" DD is light and handy, does produce good coverage and depth, and I like it on some models for open-area searches. Plowed fields, or open, lower-trash parks, and workign coastal beaches are not bad places to use the 11" DD, even on a Delta.

My replies to 'Max', above, might add some personal opinions. I like the 11" DD coil on the T2, and I keep my 'Greek series'/G2 11" DD coil mounted on a lower rod in case I want to use it on one of those models. I'm sure that as you use it a fair amount on your Del;ta you'll be able to provide your own feedback on it to readers on this forum.

Good luck to both of you with optional coil choices, and hunting with the impressive, cost-conscious Delta.

Great post Monte !!!

that way i will have it by the weekend so i can do a little more testing with it.

keep in mind i only bought this little heater for dry sand hunting during peak summer season and the fall.............targets are shallow and lots of caps, tabs and lids...........u all know the zone.

i also hate hunting the dry zone so when i do hunt it, i try and make the experence as much fun as i can and as easy as i can......= delta 4000 and a very light sand sifting scoop. my detector of choice in the past have all been tesoros.......cibola, silver umax and finally the compadre...........now that is some fine little heater for the dry sand.

as i get older and older, i have found i kinda like to read the meters......my sepro and the atpro,so when i sold my compadre to ken a month ago or so and started asking and reading for a replacment heater. i have found it.............so it had a bad coil..............that happens............my 1st expII had a bad coil out of the box in 2004......G2.......same.......like the atpro.

find post also monte and i was at the tips and tricks site last night, signed up over there.......be seeing more.

heading someplace today

good luck everyone

Thanks Monte, I will be posting my impressions of the newly acquired 11" DD coil, with the standard 8" coil and recently added 5" coil I think I will be able to handle most of my areas that I frequent with no trouble. Appreciate the good advice as always, Monte.

Good hunting to all.
