I think I broke my Ace 250's 9x12 coil :rage:

I think this because I went out hunting today and I couldn't get a solid signal at more than 4 inches to save my life!!!!! 4 inches and less it works fine, but beyond that it jumps around like crazy. I tried it with the sensitivity all the way up and medium and and on 1 bar, it all the same result. I was hunting with another guy and he found 9 wheat's at about 6 inches and he didn't have any trouble with the signal jumping around erratically. I looked at the bottom of my coil and it has cracks all over the place, even in the inner part of the coil. I have no idea how they got there. I am always careful not to bang it too hard and I have never stepped on it neither has anybody else. The only thing that I could think of is I keep my Ace 250 in the trunk of my car, and it gets super hot during the day, maybe that cracked my coil. I am at a loss for words. It looks like I have to start using the standard coil that came with it. What really gets me is I only started to use this machine back in March of this year.
Also starting like 2 weeks ago, all of my wheat cents have been regestering as dimes...

Lesson to all, buy the coil covers and use them & don't store your metal detector in you trunk of your car...

Has this ever happened to anybody else???

Sorry to hear that. Not me yet. I keep all my machines in my trunk. Never had a problem. Something to think about though. Is the coil you have an aftermarket or is it one that is made by Garrett and you can call them and get advice on? Sorry to hear your misfortune.

It doesn't sound good. Contact Garrett, they are very good about helping people out. Yes always use a coil cover, and if you store in a car at all, wrap it so it is insulated from the extreme heat.

see what they say about the coil. If you need a new one, huu I know were you can get one ;) :D

Good Luck

By the time I had noticed that I had forgotten to put the cover on, I was too into the detecting to want to walk off the beach ..back to the car....

Well in due time..the coil took its revenge on me for not protecting it.

Just like you, I was hearing all kinds of static and erratic sounds..thought at first it was the battery pack...nope...then I saw the 3 splits on the bottom of the coil..and I knew I was in trouble.

Anyway, I paid for the first replacement...got a nice BS1000; the second time I lucked out...my very generous brother , who lives in Florida had an x-tra coil that he had never used...and said I could have it! ( after he chastised me for being so careless!).

What luck!....I sent him one of my "famous" Slovak nut rolls in return...we were both happy with that trade!

Now I am very careful to always attach that coil cover.

sorry about your coil.....hope you get a new one soon

Sorry about your coil TF and hope you get it replaced really soon! I have always used coil covers....but here is a hint....when your detector isn't working well and you send it and the coil in for any repairs.....BE SURE to remove the coil covers as I had to replace mine after sending in my White's detector and coil for repairs....they replaced the coil and I had NO COIL COVER! So, remove the coil cover before sending your detector and coil in to be checked out for problems!

God Bless!

I might look stupid but I'd be making me a Bubble Wrap coil cover
