I think the thousands of people who view this forum should email Garrett and demand a new detector. If they came out with an innovative new machine

I would like a light, easy to handle detector along the lines of the 250 with push button operated fast track all metal and manual GB, along the lines of the Fisher CZ-7A Pro, multiple frequency like the Minelab and the Infinium, adjustable operating frequency from about 6 khz up to around 30 khz so one could hunt anything anywhere, a DD coil added to the already ample selection, a squeeze-type pinpoint button mounted in the upper grip, imaging that would display a 3-D image of the target ( a dream option found only on sophisticated military mine detectors ), backlight, deadly accurate pinpointing, more accurate discrimination, automatic ground tracking and Scan Track, hip mounted control box, DSP, microprocessor controlled, volume control, adjustable threshold, last mode switching, lighter coils, accept/reject notch, multiple tone ID.

If anyone can think of anything else feel free to jump into my dream and design your next detector and give Garrett some hints.

Bill

I want an image outline of what is in the ground on a screen. That would really be a new innovation for metal detecting. Garrett already has the rights to Imaging and profiling....time to shoot for another! C'mon guys and gals, you can do it

Yeah they ought to be able to copy or match the hi-tech 3-D imaging used on the mine detectors. Charles used to design guidance systems for missles so this should be a piece of cake. :)

I'd like to see the Aces audio tones completely overhauled and replaced with a modulated tone system. A VCO pinpoint would the good too. extra notches would be nice, but I think that the tone system is a big detraction from the Ace. I often have to put it away and use other brands of detectors as a result.
Having large numbers rather than notches is also easier to work with.
I love the Elliptical coil, as it gives the best target info in pinpoint over any other coil that I've used; so I hope that it never changes.
Arming it with a profiling system like the 1350, but with 5+ sizes would be a better choice than imaging. The only catch though, is that unless more modern more efficient hardware is used, then the weight is going to go up to the same weight as the GTP's and GTI's. If these could be run on 4 AA's and kept under or around 1.5Kg then it would be a major move in the right direction.
Mick Evans.

First of all I am no expert but I do like the Ace 250 but now i would like to have a detector that could do more. I am not bashing imaging or profiling because i have never used it i am sure it is very good but i don't think i need it because i tend to dig everything anyway. As far as depth i really like to get about 2 inches more because at 6 inches the 250 is dead on the money but at 7or 8 iches it gets real iffy on identifying the target. How about a water proof machine? I would love to have one that i could wade in the water and use in the rain. I love the large coils because you can cover so much more ground but then comes the trashy areas then i want my sniper coil. How about a coil that i could switch and only use the small center of the coil in the middle in trashy areas. I would like to have a depth indicator under each notch so when i get bounching signals such as iron at this depth and silver at this depth i may have 2 different targets but if they are both at the same depth it maybe just a old tin can. A backlight would be nice and a pinpoint feature that would pinpoint in a discriminating mode. ok enough of my dumb ideas but some dumb ideas turn into great inventions. It would be nice to have a 45th aniverisity edition designed by garretts customers.

Do you know which detector manufacture in todays economy could make this detector?
An unannounced Japanese or Chinese company.
Now don't get me wrong, I am an American and love America, and support our toys we make. But until the US detector industry decides to start using the technology of all the many electronics out there, Some company somewhere else is going to beat Garrett, Fisher, Teknetics, and White's to the punch.

a clock on the LCD, a built in GPS to mark locations of finds and hotspots. USB interface to make quick adjustments, cough cough E-Trac.
true weather proof craftsmanship with a rubber shroud over the pinpoint trigger (duh).
use of the battery packs found in the micro sized digital video recorders. The solution to glare on the LCD so I will be able to view a 3-d colored screen.
hire some software engineers who have a feel for user friendly interface (current video games).

take care
Jason

I would like that idea Bill, but I would like to add a display with VDI numbers or similar for us outside the US.
Else I will agree with your first post, got some good ideas right there. :detecting:

yeah two or three DD coils would be great ( my no 1 on the list ), auto & manual GB, ground tracking , more target segments, 4 tones, multy feq,GTI target sizing & land & water versions for those who like to get there feet wet ( my no 2 on the list ) if they made a detector with all this for under $700 i"d buy one tomorrow.

That would be my next choice also..the 3D imaging or like a fish finder type screen and display. With multiple freg or switch from regualar freg (6-7k) to 15k ground hog freg in same machine.

Take a standard 250. In the mode section simply replace one mode for ground balance, back lite and one for volume. Then we simply scroll to that mode and adjust them with the plus or minus button. Do we really need all those coin modes? Also if they moved the target icon up and exposed more of the LCD screen they could make the target blocks taller and better to see. This would start another Ace 250 revolution!

I've been waiting for years for a new top of the line detector to come out. A pin pointer was ok but what a disappointment.

i also would love too see a 3d type screen read out almost or something like a sonar fish finder and it has too be a turn on and go detector .

Changes Coming at Garrett

The latest news out of Garland, TX is that Garret Electronics will bring some new features to their famed GTP 1350 detector. In response to demands from customers over their excellent line of hobby metal detectors, Garrett has announced the following changes to the GTP 1350:

- True, non motion ALL-Metal mode
This operating mode is already on the GTP 1350 in the pinpoint function, so bringing it out as an operating mode is no major feat, according to Garrett engineers. This will augment the current ZERO DISCRIMINATION mode on the GTP 1350 and is expected to give an increase in detectable depth.

- Trigger Actuated Pinpoint
This will be a 3-way switch on the hand grip. By pressing the switch forward into the held position, the operator can select the All-Metal mode for operation. By pulling it backwards towards oneself, trigger fashion, the PinPoint/Profiling mode is engaged. Placing the trigger in the center held position, the normal DISCRIMINATION mode is engaged.

- Fourth target ID tone
This will affect the midrange of the detector, helping to further ID detected targets for the operator. Garrett expects to retain their popular "Belltone Coin Alert"(R), what they refer to as "The Sound Of Money!"

- Selectable VCO pinpoint
This will be an aid to pinpointing and the ALL-metal mode. The operator will be able to turn this on or off as desired.

- VDI readout
This will follow the conventional 0-99 format and will be a first for Garrett in recent times, another sign of their constant drive toward innovation.

These changes will require a slight configuration change to the current GTP 1350 detector, but Garrett expects they will be popular enough to warrant making the same changes to the rest of it's lineup, where possible.
"This is good news to the detecting community as whole," says Charles Garrett, company founder. "We will NOT change the quality or superior functionality of our instruments - that will never change. But, I realized that we should have included these things already... so that's what we're going to do. The customer comes first at Garrett!"

Yeah it was quite a let down weren't it. They can't ride the 250 wave forever. Least they could do is come out with a 250 Plus.

Bill

Yeah I forgot to add to my list a bigger display. How about lighted cursors with different colored lights for different targets.. Would work great hunting in the dark.

Bill

Yeah that's what I meant by multiple frequencies - where you could switch to any frequency you wanted from 6-30 and every frequency in between so you could set it for whatever you were hunting. All the precious metals are detected better at certain frequencies
