I was a bad boy today. I skipped work and scouted an old mining cabin in the hills east of my place....

It was such a nice day that I could not stand to do one more darn plumbing related item. I had heard about a canyon up in an old gold area that had the ruins of an old cabin at the head of the creek. Jim and I drove the ten miles up to the area and drove the "Road" if you want to call it that, as far as we could. This was where we left the truck and headed out through the sagebrush and lava boulders on foot.

It was just a short half mile hike to where the canyon ended and the cabin was reported to be. The cabin ruins are at the end of this brushy creek. You can see placer tailings in the green area of the creek to the right.

I did not hunt very long, but there were a few interesting targets and a lot of old shell casings. Enough everyday life stuff was present to make this a place to hunt later on. I found this mystery piece of cast iron. I thought at first it was part of an old stove, but I don't think it is. It is unbroken and shaped just like it was made. Any clues as to its identity?

We left the area and walked back to the truck. We had another spot we wanted to check out that we saw on the way in that had us very curious. I will tell you about that spot in my next post. It was good to get back on the main road. It looks like and interstate don't it?[attachment 124417 mainroad.jpg]
I have to show you this pict. Charley and Ed will be sure to understand why. In the background to the left of the photo is Squaw Butte. It is named that because it looks like the profile of an Indian Maiden's face, or so I'm told. The two hills to the right of the photo have a name that is discriptive as well. I would tell you what they are called, but this is a family forum. :D I took this shot as we were heading to get a burger at a mountain eatery that still has a hitchin' post out front and when we got there a horse was tied to it. This is Idaho! Nice day for a little exploring! DC
