I did a little experiment. If I was new to metal detecting and just got a F70 (or new to the F70) what would be the easiest way to learn without so much frustration? This idea came up:
F70 settings part 1: Disc@10, DE mode, Sens@60, Thres@-3, Tones@3H Ground balance 84-76. Hunt with 6.5" coil... The first picture is results of digging all good repeatable signals (down 1"-3")

F70 settings part 2: disc@25, DE mode, Sens@60, Thres@-3, Tones@3H, Ground balance 80-76. Notched out tabs. The second picture is results of digging good repeatable HIGH tone signals. (down 1"-3") and watching for coin signals (numbers).
The key was 66 usually don't dig those guys. The silver wings and gold wine bottle cap came up dime/copper penny range. The other 2 finds, bottle cap and square metal were around found coins. I always use the pin pointer to go around the area of a found coin to see if there are more coins in the area. Many times there are other coins around found coins.
Hope it helps someone? Thanks for stopping by and Happy Trails....Z

Those wings 925 or just silver in color? That junk shot is a good indicator of whats out there waiting for us. So your doing a "modified high grade" by discing out iron and most foil, bumping nickles into high tones, notching tabs, and gunning for high denom shallow clad and silver? Hmm, low sens, I like that, -3 thresh, agree there too...that's a decent enough set up for you to hit a silver dime at 5-6" as well, maybe more depending on soil moisture...I say modified high grade on account of you setting nickels into high tone...That is a good and decent trash park program for sure for mid to large gold, silver and coins. Very glad you got out and had some fun! Thanks for another fine experiment with the 70!:clapping::please::beers:

You got it Mud. I like hunting this way. It is quiet and at the end of the day I have a lot of coins to count. There usually isn't much junk to throw away. Sometimes I like to hunt for nickles and will dig from 28-35 to see if any of these numbers are good for nickles. Sometimes a on top of the ground nickle will go to 35. Most of the time nickles are 31-32. 33 and up are tabs from the tops of cans. 64-69 are usually junk numbers. 70-74 good dimes. 60-61 are zinc pennies and usually 57-58 bad zinc's. 59-60 sometimes wheat's. Of course I know you know this. But just may help some one? When there is even a high chirp it stops me dead in my tracks and than I find the target. I than pin point the target and go over the target a few times to make sure it is a solid coin number. If the numbers are jumping or the wrong tone I usually move on. There are some I do dig because I just feel like I should investigate and a good number of times it is a good target. I am not watching the numbers while swinging, just listening to the sounds and moving right along at a nice pace. I guess that is what is called knowing your machine???:nerd: Wow that is deep!!
Thanks for reply Mud and HH....Z

Yep, theres something to be said about being "one" with a detector..takes some time and dedication, but when it happens, man, what a peaceful day can be had,
