ID EXCEL question

So far I really like this detector,I have even talked my father into buying one which he should receive today.The only thing I am a little concerned is how tough is this detector? I have heard that moisture gets inside the box fairly easy and will cause havoc. Any one have any problems with theirs?Or has anyone put theirs through the test and had no problems?I am used to getting down and dirty sometimes and wanted to know If I should use "kid gloves".Thanks for the replies.

Well, the answer is yes & no. Yes, I have seen an Excel that was brought out into the rain go down. But, maybe this is not unusual as it's not billed as waterproof. Bringing it out in the rain basically is really pushing it, & I always cover all my control boxes with bags or a shower cap. My Excel has taken a licking & is all scratched up, been pulled, dropped, etc....so I don't think it's fragile. But, as a sophisticated piece of electronics it's best to not to treat it like mine Short answer is have a bag handy in case of rain & you'll be fine.......

Thanks Bill,good info. I will not be so spooked while detecting in woods or rough conditions.My CZ5 is so rugged you could run over it with a car and it would still work.

but obviously this is newer technology that's more computerized and digital, w. LCD, etc.....(I don't know all the technical terms). So, I try to be somewhat careful in the field, but with a lifetime warranty that keeps me from being overly paranoid

I was detecting with Bill in England when we saw an Excel go down due to rain. I think the operator, a very good detectorist, just crossed the line of bad weather and allowed a few too many dropplets hit the control of the detector, I was there and it was a slight drizzle of a rain. Water seeped into the tactiles of the button membranes and it was over, A sad day but there were backup detectors for him to use. Bottom line, don't let it get wet at all, at least the control housing, use a rain cap or bag. It's a very good detector, finds will prove this and the Fisher's are deep seekers. HH, Mike

A plastic bag it is,I bought the ID used so no warranty.So far I think it is great. I sent fisher an email asking about a rain or dust cover and one is not in production .May be they will start making one. The couple of times I went out with the ID ,the ground was wet and I was a bit spooked. A good old shower cap should do the trick.LOL Thanks ,for the info and Mike ,let me know when you get back down this way!HH
