found this today, it looks like some type of coin that was made into a pin?? it appears to be silver underneath all the dirt. any ideas what this is?

Not sure it is a coin? Might be a commemorative piece?

Possibly a reproduction of an old Roman coin from the first or second century. With the die offset, as the old coins were, it looks as if someone reproduced the likeness and made a pin out of it. Possible massed produced. The original coins of that time period usually did not have a perfect circle design to them as they were crudely made. Alot of places sell commeratives and such, but this piece may be old none the less. It would pay to research it out.
 
I agree with DK...as that what I thought it was too, either an old Roman Coin or a reprodution! Anyway a neat find! Congrats! Betty
