I have a silver tray that is very heavy. It has an etched pattern on the top that looks to be large leaves. It has two handles as well. One is broken, my cat made it fall. It was my grandmothers so I believe it is old. The edges are scalloped as well. I have looked all over and can not find any markings. It is rectangular in shape. Any information on it would be wonderful, name, age, and if it is really silver or plated. I tried the ice cube test and it melted right away. I am not interest in selling it, but wondering if it is worth anything, since it broke- somehow to get it fixed if worth it. Thanks for your help. Email me I can provide u pictures. A picture posted here would help a lot. Expecially of where it is broken if it allows us to see the interior metal. If you need a picture hosting service, Tinypic.com is a free one that I like to use. Very easy and no signing up or logging in at all.

Yes, if it has steel, plated is probably the best you can hope for. Some modern rings have steel in Tungsten rings, but that is a recent thing.
Is it tarnished?; most old silver would show some tarnish unless it was regularly cared for.

its a beautiful piece, and very heavy. i wish my cat hadnt knocked it off my fridge but i guess i could take the handles off, and hang on way. I would never use it, simply because its so heavy. Can't image putting food and trying to carry it. LOLSweet find, amazing how clean you got it if its anything other then silver. I found a spoon today that I hit with my digger BAH broke the spoon, is there such a thing as a cooper spoon that has a fake silver coating on it?? Didn't clean very good on outside but where my digger hit the spoon it has a cooper look on the inside.???
Thanks for sharing the picture of the tray, that's a cool find. I usually don't dig when I get a signal that big since it usually turns out to be a crushed can or rusted something or another but seeing that might get me back to digging more of those bigger signals that covers the whole coil.
