I'm impressed. The Goldquest is a great nickle getter!

Hit Myrtle Beach this weekend. It was terribly sanded in. And the waves were too big to even try to surf hunt. Found one gully that I worked with the Excaliber and picked up a few coins on the ocean side of the gully (kind of unusual because usually most of the targets are on the beach side of the gullies). The next low tide, 2 AM, I took the Goldquest and hit the same gully (it had changed very little). I pulled 4 nickles, one dime and one penny and some rusted jewelry. No gold but finding the nickles in quantity gave me the confidence that if the gold was there I would have found it. The Excaliber certainly did not find the nickles. There were some targets that I just could not dig, the sand filled in faster than I could get it out. The Goldquest is for young men that are willing to be grave diggers. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b"> I've learned to hate the small signals. I think that hitting an area with the Excaliber or Explorer and then going back over productive areas with the Goldquest is a good strategy. I definitely will not use it on the upper beach, there is just way too much trash.

Hey Jim,
Sounds like "experience" talking in your report. I think of the Goldquest as a "Specialist Tool" that I respect. Whenever I see several other guys or gals working a beach instead of thinking they have raped the beach I see it as "They have cleaned out the trash so now I can go to work", this is an opportunity.
May I add one other thing that the Goldquest will do for you. Since we do not have a 'exact way' to eliminate iron, we dig lots of it and small items also....but numbers of times these small items and iron items are masking gold items that do not sound off from being masked. Since these iron and small items are very deep the VLF's did not sound them and the Goldquest does not allow them to keep hidden, up comes a gold ring with a hairpin or nail. When you start seeing the iron junk that is extremelly rusted away and covered with ocean life....you know you are in zone 2 or layer 2. In layer 2 and 3 are items that the other guys have not hit or missed in past weeks/moonths/years. Here lies the "Virgin" beach you have longed for.
The Goldquest SS has made me "rearrange" or "change" my thinking on 'how/when/why" to detect and area. My attitude change in the actual doing has totally affected the way I detect and think. This change in my "upstairs" computer/hardisk is just as important as my owning the Goldquest SS. You are already learning and seeing that, your post gives this away....Enjoyed your post.... Frank

long way from understanding all this machine is telling me. I've been thinking of getting a motorized ice auger and seeing if I can reach some of those deeeeeeep targets.

Hello Jim,
You're not kidding about the GQ loving them nickels, Sniffs them out every time.
The past three months, I've been using my waterproof GQ, waterproof Sovereign and Headhunter Pi. Even though the drive is 400 miles round trip I still manage to search the beach about once a week. During this span of 12 weeks I've found 9 gold rings with all three detectors and used all three equally...............The GQ has found 5 of the gold rings with the Headhunter pi recovering 3 and the Sovereign 1, The GQ nails the deeper gold conductors.
Recently, I had the opportunity to test out a new sandscoop still in development stages from a local company. Both the owner/friend making the sandscoop and myself hunted the beach five hours straight, I used the waterproof GQ and he used my waterproof Sovereign. Luckily I recovered a deep ladies gold ring the first hour, We switched detectors and from there he used my GQ the remaining four hours and quickly feel in love with the unit.
To make a long story short my friend new the GQ was the better detector for gold jewelry, Now he's thinking about buying one. Enjoyed reading your post and look forward to seeing more of your post in the future.
