I'm Liking the Digital Readout

DukeOBass

Active member
I went back out today and found 2 Memorial pennies and a Jefferson Nickel.

Hi Duke, I went out also...Found an even $5 in clad & pennies...Only 1 wheatie-1956...Likewise I switched from my normal mode of crosshairs to digital & think I like it a lot more...TT

n/t

Let me add some text...I've used it almost every day though...I drive transfer trucks & being winter there is not a LOT of work...Come spring & summer that will change...I make enough during the winter to pay the bills but that's it...During the summer though when construction is going on it can be brutal...TT

Greetings, tomtowns,
when I hunt I use the digital mode. When I get a desirable target I cross check it to the cross hairs (smart find) to see where it falls. It took awhile to memorize the readouts, now that setup works fine now. It seems that the digital screen is more precise on identifying a target. happy Hunting Grounds,

Same with me. My first hunt was December 2nd. I think I really like the Digital mode. Having a cursor jumping all over the place is a bit confusing I think.
With Digital you at least dig the numbers you know are in the "GOOD" range.

I agree. Watching the numbers has worked best for me.

And that is I need to expand my hunting grounds...I've only been hunting the downtown parks because they have been there for a little over a hundred years...everything else has either been paved or built over, & MOST parks have really been HAMMERED, capitol park seems to be the exception...LOTS of CLAD...I have never seen another detector in the park...Most of the coins found by forum members seem to be older than my state:rofl:

I started out in Smartfind-All metal but am finding the digital numbers are way superior as far as getting a better id on things...yes I listen for tones as my primary search tool & then check the readout...I have a lot to learn with this detector...I have the tone for pennies, dimes, quarters, down pretty good & am working on gold & nickels right now but it's REALLY hard when hunting the parks to not JUST go for the 00-29...TT

That's one problem I don't have. I live in rural Pennsylvania so there are many places to hunt. Have you tried the beaches?

Well I've tried both & at first the crosshairs seemed to work best...But lately I seem to be in digital more often than not...In fact when I hear a good tone...(one that I'm listening for) & find I'm in crosshairs I don't skip a beat & switch back to digital without hesitation...I think it gives a much better representation of the target...A natural progression???

...using digital mode. It was a good solid nickel readout at 10 Ferrous and 08 Conductive. I don't know if I would have found using the crosshairs. I have found that I'm getting old rusted cut nails in the "Silver" readout area.

Hi tomtowns,
I know what you mean. 03-28 dime, 10-06 nickle, 00-28 quarter 15-01 rings/foil. I have dug a 14k Mason ring on 08-14-16. I find it hard to dig trash signals, however if I don't I will miss the jewellery. When I check the smart find screen, it will tell me if if falls in the desirable areas. 07-25-26 is always a zinc penny so, I pass them up. Happy Hunting Grounds,

The pacific ocean is a LOT colder than the atlantic due to the direction of the current...The pacific comes from the north whereas the atlantic flows from the south so not many people swim in the ocean up this way...I think Rodney Dangerfield put it right on target..."My coldest winter was the summer I spent In San Francisco" I do plan on getting an EXCAL for hunting in lake Tahoe & Under Bridges & rocks that I used to dive off when I was a kid & I'll be useing a hookah system...but If I ever hunt the ocean it will either be in the gulf- atlantic- or the pacific at least as far south as L.A. (about 500 miles south)....up north the water is just too cold for people to be frolicing in the water...TT

I like digital also Duke on my XS. Call it a comfort zone or whatever, but I do switch to smart screen and use iron mask also. My last gold ring came it at 8 digital and now I'm wondering how many other possible gold rings I might have passed up by not digging them. Like my buddy Lee always says, "if it beeps dig it"..:) HH and Happy New Year.

Some rings, Indian heads and a few other good targets are 07-25/26. Think of what you might have missed???

Stoops,

That very well could be, I am learning that the least expected reading could possibly be a keeper ring. I have found rings 14k at 08-14-16, 12-01, 10-08-10, 15-01. I guess I will have to add 07-25-26 to my "to do" list. Thanks stoops for the info. Its an ongoing learning experience. Happy Hunting Grounds,
