Hi Deb43 !
I've had my Ace250 for 2-1/2 years and am very pleased with it !
A few suggestions.......Get a good set of headphones, made specifically for metal detecting if possible and the best you can afford. Even with all the visual aids that appear on the Ace's console, it's important to listen and learn to identify the different audio nuances produced by different metals of different conductivities. A quality set of headphones will help you do this.
Also, learn to pinpoint with the Ace and then "detune" to get a more exact target location.
A small electronic pinpointer would be another great help, to locate exactly where in the hole the target is hiding, i.e. somewhere in the sides of the hole or further down in the bottom, or in the dirt plug removed or the loose dirt piled beside the hole. Once in a while, the target is peeking out of the dirt when you first lift the plug, but usually not, so some additional digging is necessary with a screw driver or trowel. Some folks leave their metal detector turned ON and laying beside them, where they can pass hand fulls of dirt across the coil, until they get a signal. But, there can be nasty shards of glass, sharp little pieces of "can slaw" (aluminum soda-pop cans chewed into pieces by lawn mowers.) and many other things in the ground that will cut your hands. Also, dirty hands usually means a dirty metal detector and wearing gloves is an annoyance when coin and jewelry hunting, I think. It's neater and faster to use an electronic pinpointer probe to scan the hole, locate the exact target position, then pluck it out. That way, you aren't enlarging the entire hole looking for the target, just one spot, and then you are off and running again to the next target !
These are just a few things you need to be aware of and with experience you will make choices on accessories based on your own preferences and budget. Members here are always glad to offer advice on equipment, techniques and accessories......don't be shy, we all had to learn.
Good Hunting !
Todd
