I'm on the west coast and promise not to hunt your fields.

I know very little about detecting plowed farm fields and would appreciate any help from any of you seasoned veterans who hunt fields. I have an Explorer XS and with the stock coil, seven inch and five inch coils and a Platypus. Should I invest in say a 15" WOT coil or do you think the coils I have are sufficient? Also, any settings that you use that might help me in the field would be appreciated as well. Thanks and HH............:)

Eddie

Well a WOT coil will aid you in covering more ground and it will go deeper! I'm not to familiar with that Platypus coil so I can't comment on that! You might look for some settings by Charles in Upstate NY I think he hunts alot of fields. Just an Idea

IM @-16, manual sens. as high as possible without falsing
10.5" coil is fine unless you want to cover more area faster and
get Popeye arms. Always do perimeter closest to edge. Try to find a hotspot that seems to have more targets than other areas in field. Work that real well. Don't be surprised to find stuff at 12" or more.

Expect to dig lots of iron.
A day or so after a rain is prime.
Some days will produce nothing but junk.
Are you digging old things? Expect some old coins somewhere in that field. Good luck!

Eddie, That is how I approach fields also. I couldn't run -16 when I first started using my EX II though.

If you find IM-16 to much to deal with (a lot of noise when there's a lot of iron), you can set your screen up using edit so it matches the IM set at about -12 to -14 what ever your ears can handle. When you have a questionable target you can hit the IM button (set at -16) and if there's a coin or button near the iron you will learn to hear the sound of the good target fighting through the rusty iron signal. This is what I did to accustom my self to all the noise. After some time running this way you will soon be able to open it up to -16 all the time and the rusty cut nails and other junk will be almost like a threshold. The guys on this forum helped me start this way and it worked for me.

I just got the platypus and have only been out with it once. Still hard frost in the ground where I hunt. I was really impressed with the coil I dug two buttons with it that day, one was near big rusty iron. If first impressions mean anything I can say the platypus is going to be a great field coil, and if you decide to slip into the woods it's easier to work in the brush than the WOT. I had to run it at 18 or 19 for sensitivity, a lot of mineralization in the soil here.

Good luck, and if you come east drop me a line, you can come pound some fields with me. There are lots of fields and this hobby is more fun when you have people to share it with.

Thanks Ocean7. The area I will hunting is a place where they use to have yearly picnics from the late 1890's and into the late 1920's. They had a race track, ball field and people use to camp there in tents by the creek. It's all gone now including the old wooden grandstand and it's hard to say just how deep any coins might be after 100 plus years. Not sure if this area has been hunted before and then again this area has been planted and plowed under for years, so I really don't know what to expect. Like I have said in other posts, I'm hoping to find my first seated coin and I figure this place is as good as any. I'll do my best and thanks again for the help. HH....:)

Thanks Arron. I really appreciate the help and hopefully this place will produce some nice finds for me. I'm hoping to get together with the property owner and have him look at some of the old photos I have and maybe we can pinpoint where most of the action use to be.HH...:)

Eddie

Thanks Mike. I think I will just stick with the coils I have and hope for the best. If I need something to go deeper I can always get the bigger coil and go back to this place.HH........:)

I am working nights and sleeping days right now and doing research while I wait for the frost to break. Winter sucks.
