Inductance Meter

Hi all,
I seem to recall that there was a discussion a while back about the availability of an inductance meter for checking coils. It seems that the cheaper mulimeters that have that function don't go down into the microhenry range so wouldn't be suitable. I know I couldn't find one a few years ago and bought a fairly expensive LCR unit. I stumbled across this multimeter that seems to fill the bill at an incredible price.

I have ordered one to try just because it was so cheap. I'm not endorsing this product since I don't have one yet. I just thought some of you would be interested in this unit since it seems to do just about everything for $60.
Good luck,
Charles

Interesting. Here's the one I've been using and like quite a bit:

He makes an easy to assemble kit, or a fully assembled unit. Either way there's not much to it, and it works, and it works well. I'm very happy with it, and it's accurate compared to some fairly expensive test equipment I've compared it to for whatever that's worth to ya.
That meter, combined with a scope and frequency generator, and you're in the coil business <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Nice device, but not very accurate, and not auto-calibrating. However, looks good value for money for most uses.
The one I use is a PIC-based kit (see link below) - I have found it to be excellent for several years, and its extremely popular, fast, accurate and allows nice feature like matching two components in critical functions. It also auto-calibrates. Took, me about an hour to make.

Hello Nicko, I suggest some years ago this LCR meter in this forum o in the Foster forum , I agreed also with you very good ,cheap, and very precision LCR meter, I recommand in the first place , and if you do not want in Kit you can buy it armed and calibrated. When you experiment with PI detector you need a accurate and reliable LCR .
Nice Guys this company.

You get a heckuva lot for the money. However, the inductance resolution is still a bit coarse at 10uH, but it might be OK for detector coils. All coils I've measured thus far are at least a couple hundred microhenries.
BK Precision's 875 has 0.1uH resolution, albeit +/- 2 digits. So let's say 0.5uH. And, it can be had on ebay every so often for $80 or so.
The kit LC meter the other guys mentioned looks nice. Guess it lacks dissipation/Q though.

I have the B&K 878 LCR and have been satisfied with it. I just figured for the money and other functionality, I'd give this meter a try.
Thanks,
Charles

Charles,
I've just noticed that Peak Electronics, who make some whizzy test kit at very low prices, have just released what looks like a *lovely* LCR meter...
I may just order one for the hell of it...
