Initial Omega 8000 impressions revised

I just got back from a week of upper 70's temps. in Minnesota and at the last minute decided to take the Omega along, along with my F 75 LTD. As some of you know, my first impressions of the Omega 8000 weren't all that great, namely, as mine seemed to lack decent depth. I have still not dug any what I would call deep coins, more then 7," with the Omega, but I must admit it is growing on me.

Nearby the resort we were at in a small town is a 100 plus year old farigrounds that I have hunted pretty hard now for about twenty + year's with several different detectors, including my LTD while up there last month. All in all, I used the Omega about 15 hours hunting a very , very trashy stretch and divided the time between the 10" and 5" coils. On one end of this stretch are some power lines and I had to drop sen. down to about 80, other wise I ran sen. at 99, disc.1 and d4 tones. GB was usually right around 70 with an Feo of 3 bars.

All in all, between the two coils, I dug 1904 & 06 IH cents, 6 wheaties, 2 war nickels, (43s & 44p) 1 57 Rosie dime and some clad. 1 of the wheats was the 7" coin and the 10" coil hit it. I also dug a lot of trash, mainly, just so I could get to know the detector better. It really does ID great.

This detector has the ear marks of being something very special "in the trash." All of the above mentioned targets were co-located with some other piece of trash or another coin. 1 of the nickels was partially masked by a zinc cent less then a inch off to the side and about 2" above the nickel. The 06 IH gave me a mid tone and low tone mix and just off to the side of the IH was a 3" rusty nail. Just to name a couple of instances of co-located targets.

Over all, I was pretty pleased with the Omega, as over the year's I have hunted this trashy stretch pretty hard with some other pretty good detectors and various size coils.

Give me an 8 or 9" deep coin with this detector, and there will be no looking back.

Tomorrow I'll be hunting in the 90's again. HH jim tn

Jim----If it's increased depth you want to see with the Omega---put that 11" DD coil on.----It's made a BIG difference for me in depth compared to the 10" concentric (at least here in my OR ground).-----Del

Jim, congrats. on the finds, and it's good that you're liking the Omega more now. If Del hadn't mentioned the 11" coil, I would have said exactly the same thing. I think the Omega is something special, but it doesn't need a fanfare....it just works away quietly finding coins and stuff.HH

Del, Furious T, I had been using the 11DD coil a good bit of the time when I first started using the Omega. It is possible that I just have not gone over a deeper coin yet with the Omega. One of my main concerns for finding deeper coins with it was its seemingly weak audio on 3-4" deep coins. And I use good headphones, Gray Ghost. I think, though, if I really fall in love with this detector, it will be because of what it will do in trash with the 10" and 5" coils. Not a lot of hours behind the 8000 yet, but was pretty impressed with what it did on the old Mn fairgrounds from this one stretch. Besides hunting behind my LTD, F 75, cz3d and a couple of other detectors, I actually hunted right behind a fellow that had just spent two hours hunting the same trashy stretch with one of those down under wands. He was just walking to his car when I pulled up and we ended up having a nice conversation. He had found a couple of wheats and a Buffalo nickel. It is just such situations that prove no one detector ever gets it all and also, that with ever changing conditions, no site is ever hunted out. I have proved that by making finds behind myself countless times over the year's. HH jim tn

"depth' isn't everything. You mentioned you've hunted this same old fairgrounds for "twenty + year" and can still find things. Depth, while good at times, still isn't the key to success everywhere. How about my favorite old ghost town out west that I first hunted on May 4th, 1969. Yes, that was over 41 years ago and it still isn't 'cleaned out." I might have hunted it more than any other individual on earth 9or gone now) as many have hunted it, but the trash level is just terrible! I have found a few deeper coins, such as my 6"-6

That's just EXCELLENT points what you are bringing out Monte.----I got a site something similar to that up in the mts. here that if I'm going to take a larger coil--I just as well stay home!-----There are places where small coils RULE--period! :) ------Del

I love those small coils for hunting those extreme trashy sites. The 5" stays on my LTD about 75% of the time. Monte, I hear where you are coming from as far as depth is concerned. I do, though, want to know it is there if I need it. The "proof of the pudding," so to speak, for me, with any new detector I get is whether it will find a few good targets out of hard hit spots. Both, by me and others. And, the Omega is doing that. HH jim tn
