Interesting Historic film 1906 San Francisco.

Seeing that we are into history on this site I thought you might like to see a movie in 1906. This movie was lost for years and rediscovered.Back in the days of Barber money and Indian heads. I hope it will go through. If not google: 1906 San Francisco Cable Car Film

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k Cut and past to address bar.

This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!).. It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing, but true!

Yeah, that is a pretty cool thing to be able to see! People mugging for the camera even then. Thought I saw a Barber drop out of a pocket on the street...

That's a neat film - did you notice the carload of people who keep driving in front of the camera ? Maybe three or four times.

I saw that on our local Cali detecting forum. Really cool video.

I've got a few of those '06, San Francisco mint earthquake barbers in my collection. :super:
I found one up in Frisco, and a few down in S. Cal. Great piece of history, but quite an infamous year for San Franciscans. There were shelters/camps set up for months at Golden Gate park after the earthquake. And there's plenty of iron from all the nails when they tore down those shelter foundations. Tough hunting, but lots of old coinage and relics!!

Very cool film. I can't believe how crowded the streets were and the lack of any really traffic laws and the mix of transportation - carts, horses, cars, bicycles, streetcars, etc. Just think of all the coins and other trinkets that were dropped and lost on that one street alone. Thanks for pointing out this film to us. HH

Your right. It's about as close as you will come to know what it was like to live back then. I have watched it numerous times and still see something new each time.
