my settings on the beach are uasually pretty wide open, lately though iv'e set my disc.& have notched out 1-6 & 9 - 13 because of the crap i keep getting on the beach i detect. my question is when i hear a break in my threshold but no solid target how often is that a discriminate null or could it be a deep target? i have not been digging those breaks, should i? if i do dig them seems to me i should forget about discrimination. mixed up in lb ca. diggitdawg

Hope you realise that some gold rings fall into the 9-13 numerical readings. And a few relics fall into the lower number category. I know a lot of trash can be a pain, and unfortunately that's what you get when detecting trashy ground, but I would be using All Metal mode with no discrimination using the Quattro, and get to know what you're listening to so that you can make a decision on whether or not to dig the target. You''l learn by digging everything at first, till your mind becomes accustomed to associating certain signals with certain targets. When you use discrimination you are potentially nulling over possible good targets. I wouldn't take the chance. With the Explorers you can afford to discriminate because it will do so quite finely, so you can pluck out of the ground particular targets you're after. But with the Quattro, the discrimination isn't so fine and you will miss targets. Don't ever underestimate the ability of your mind in deciphering out good signals from bad (potential targets from trash). With practice in All metal mode, you'll pick it up. If you're new to the machine, try ground that's not so trashy, or you'll overload your senses and feel like giving up. Pick a day that's not too breezy or windy as this can interfere with signals too.

thanks golden, trying new stuff but i should probably get back to the basic, all metal mode..... the sound of the theshold breaking & feeling like i missed something is really driving me nuts lol. i should probably try andy's technique of checking some of these targets in the ferrous audio mode. sounds like it will help to distinguish trash from treasure a little better. diggitdawg
