Is it legal to hunt rest areas?

If someone on here lives in NY State, maybe you would know. I recently made a trip to and from Connecticut. I took and older freeway I-88 that runs from Albany to Binghamton. They have these nice, older style, rest areas with picnic grounds and thought, as we took a break from driving at one, that this would be a nice site to hunt. Who would you get permission from? Does NY treat rest areas as they do State Parks in that you can't hunt them? If anyone knows any info would be appreciated. Thanks so much. That stretch of highway didn't seem to get much traffic and there wasn't many people at the rest stop.

If it is DOT it is probably state lands.

If it is a federal highway be even more careful!

Wouldn't hurt to check with them though. I never thought of hunting rest areas hmmmmm....

Oakman, I know that stretch of Rt 88 you are referring to. I have searched some abanded rest areas and have not had any problems. If the rest area is active and is being taken care of by the state I'm sure you would not be able to get permission. It's a good question and worth looking into.

I've hunted at rest areas in NY. Not the ones you mentioned. Be prepared for a lot of trash. A LOT!

Don't know about NY but I have hunted them in the West. This reminds me of a story where my Father-in-law got a shock.. My Father-in-law and Mother-in-law were motor homing around the country and stopped at a rest stop back east somewhere. My Father-in-law noticed a guy detecting the grounds so he walked over and struck up a conversation with him. In the course of the conversation my Father-in-law asked the guy if he ever read any of the treasure magazines. The guy said that he did. My Father-in-law said his son-in-law wrote for all of them and he wondered if he had ever heard of me or read anything I had written. The guy piped right up and said,' Yeah, I read all his stuff." My Father-in-law couldn't believe it. Here he was on the other side of the U.S., runs into a total stranger out in the middle of nowhere who knew who I was. Really blowed his mind.

If you do hunt those rest areas, you better bring out your Sniper Coil. Like the last post said, theres tons of trash!!!!!
If you don't have a Sniper Coil, gget one. They are well worth the investment and get decent depth for the kind of hunting
you'll do in the rest areas. The only real problem ow is that they are jam packed with people 24-7. Ten years ago it wasn't like that so much.

My wife and I are full time RVers. We hunt rest areas and picnic areas quite regularly while travelling to our next destination. Your bound to find some keepers, but(as previously mentioned)be prepared to dig tons of trash. Best of luck to ya! Have fun!Happy Hunting!

Some people have to worry about that, I don't! My wife says the scariest thing she ever saw was the first time she saw me naked and bent over the bath tub!

I hunt them in Iowa,lots of trash clad, it adds up.
