Is it worth beach hunting Portland, ME in February?

Looks like I'll be heading to Portland Maine for one week in February, and I was wondering if it's worth bringing the detector along for a half day of beach hunting. I don't have a waterproof unit, but can pack either the Fisher F-75 or Minelab Safari. Should I give it a go? If so, any tips on which beaches would be the best to try?

Thanks,
Bart

im not sure what type of beach is up there but if you have the time to detect id go out and at least try....:clapping::detecting:
good luck
let us know how you did..

HI Psyvad; Nope not worth it. Socked in weather wise with snow and if you think its cold in Florida try Maine. I live in Boston, MA and Maine is too cold for me and I'm used to the cold here. Second, if you don't get the low tide 3 hours before it crests you only have 3 hours or less hunt time remaining. To haul all that stuff from Florida to Maine for just 3 - 6 hours max hunting time ain't worth it. I don't want to be a nay sayer but if the weather was warm you should go for it just not now. OK? I want to go to Florida myself.!! By the way welcome aboard. Anyway Good luck. PEACE:RONB

I lived in Portland for years. The state beach at the end of Munjoy Hill is mostly rocks, however, there is a lot of park green to work. As an alternative to beach and surf, you may want to go over to Stevens Avenue and try the old Westbrook College next to cemetery. Also, across from the Catholic convent was an old tavern that got torn down a few years ago. I hunted it and found nothing except shingle nails from modern times, but I was in a hurry too, so you may want to try it. It was also summer, so a lot of green to fight with. There is also another park just down the road next to the convent that a lot of people pass through. Best of all you won't have to get wet. Hope that helps.

Hi Folks; Great tips on Portland. Only problem is everything is frozen solid. Ground is like cement now. Any open beach areas are fair game though. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

The beaches south of Porland are good, Old Orchard Beach and south from there along route 1.

I live in Maine. The ground here for land detecting is too hard at the moment, will be around March / April before it becomes soft to dig unless we get a freak heat wave here to warm things up and melt the snow here.
