IS MY 250 NORMAL?

I just recently got a 250 and I'm wondering if it's working right, I have found a few things (about $2.50 worth) but I took it to a park today and it started acting weird. Noise coming through the headphones (static), acting erractically so I turned down the sensitivity and that didn't work so I put it in coin mode and it worked a little better. This was in a field not around any playground equipment. Then when I found something it may say like 4-6 inches and then I put the pinointer on and it's like 2" (which is right?) Wondering if I should send it back

I get this with my ace when i"m near power lines under, ground gas pipes & areas with clay a couple of inches under the surface. just try it at a couple of places and if it keeps doing it call the dealer or garret.

Maybe it's you headphones? Did you try it without them? Also in some areas you may have to reduce your sens to 3 bars. How low did you have your sens? Do you have new alkaline batteries? Is your coil cable connection tight? Is your coil cable ran strait up your shaft tight and fastened every 8 inches?

Try a Factory Reset. When you turn the machine on, hold the power button down for a few seconds, then release. This kinda re-boots the machine. Run the 250 at 4 bars Sens., keeps the falsing to a minimum and you don't really lose anything, just the false signals. The more Sens. you run it at, the more sensitive it is to both the good and the bad. The Depth readout in Pinpoint is the correct depth.

On a reset like BCD said you'll have to have the machine off. Then push the power button until you hear 2 beeps. It takes about 5 seconds.

@Khouse Brand new Ace headphones that worked fine everywhere else, After I got home I tried the Ace in the front and Back yard and it worked great. As far as sens goes I started at 4 and went down to 2 to get it quiet. The cable is just wound around the shaft, Should it be attached every 8" and what with? Batteries are brand new. @BIGCATDADDY Should I still do a factory reset if it's working alright at the house? All connections are tight. I'm assuming it's operator error but when I took it to the beach it didn't do it. Maybe just alot of UG power lines and stuff or a real trashy area.I don't know what to think.Thank you for the help

It sounds like you may be near some RF interference. There are a couple of spots that I have hit that are unsearchable due to overhead lines, no matter what sens I have the 250 set at.

I use velcro straps to secure the coil cable. Resetting the factory defaults will not hurt it at all.

The MAIN thing about the coil cable is that it's not so tight that it's pulling on the connector when you sweep the coil. I like to have never figured it out until I tried to tighten it with the detector ON and it went bonkers. Other than that I have heard on other forums about the coil being bad or a battery holder wire either being bent or not making contact.:garrett:

Try running your sensitivity at four bars. reboot the detector by holding the power button down for ten seconds or longer. Keep the coil off the ground and scan with it at least an inch off the ground. Make sure your cable is wound snugly and not flopping around as the coil will pick up those movements. Outside interference could also be a problem or heavy mineralization in the area you are hunting. Try it out in a bark chip playground and see if it still acts up.

IF you have a coil cover on it take it off and see if there is any sand or dirt in it that may be magnetized..... if there is put the dirt on a piece of board making sure there are no nails in it.... clean the bottom thoroughly and put it back together then lift the board off the ground a few feet and run it over the dirt to see if it is magnetized.....

A cover will collect all kinds of debris that causes falseing, including moisture, which is why I never use one. One doesn't need one unless they are using their detector for a hammer.

AS I found out myself..... it could be a number of issues. Its all ready been stated about a tight cable near the coil. Too loose of a loop caused me some grief also. Kinda like the story of the 3 bears with me. I had to get it just right for mine to straighten up. Also had a problem with my headphones .......... the cord was a little long on mine and was dangling too close to the coil. Used a twist tie to shorten it up and it worked fine.

Also had weird signals that didn't make since in my back yard and after a lot of experimenting with no luck I decided to dig up all the places I was getting those sig's and I ended up pulling up over $80.00 worth of copper wire out of the ground.

Being fairly new to this hobby I had all sorts of prob's to start out with that I thought sure was my machine acting up. In short I just wasn't quite familiar with the machine yet. Keep trying and experimenting and you'll get it figured out. There is a lot of truth when people say that you'll have to spend some hours with your particular machine to figure its own little quirks out. It took me about 20 hours to be able to pinpoint dead on but I still run into some soils that throw me off. I truly believe in what everyone advised me when I 1st received mine............. Dig everything until you get the knack! Took me a while to realize that some of the trash signal that were showing were actually some great stuff!
