Is my widescan coil to sensitive?

kimbershot

I've used my 10 x 12 widescan with long cable on my Vaquero 2x. The first time out--in the all metal mode I would get a tone change with the mere brushing of the coil rim on a toothpick size sapling. I used electrical tape to secure the cable, though not completely. There was no slack and the pole was secure with no wobble. I did not experience any "hits" in the discrimination mode.

On the second excursion, I extended the tape and enclosed the cable entirely. I still got "hits" in the all metal mode, though they weren't as prevelant as the first time around. The coil operated with no issues in the disc mode.

Am I doing something wrong or might there be an issue with the coil.:nopity:

I get the same problem with my outlaw.

I suspect you did not get your coil perfectly balanced when you started. I find with my other coils I want to be slightly negative where as this coil has to be *perfectly* balanced. I also have the clean sweep coil. It too needs to be perfectly balanced.

Once balanced, adjust the sensitivity and threshold. Once you get those to where you want them... check back and see if you are still balanced, adjust accordingly.

For whatever reason adjusting anything causes the balance to shift a little (at least for me on the outlaw, to the positive as I recall).

I too found it helped to have the coil cable going directly up the shaft at least to the locking ring before wrapping it around the shaft, straighter the better.

You might also want to see if you are getting interference. Check for power lines, and turn off your cell phone. I had mine oscillating (sounded like woop-woop-woop) off something one time.. I think it was an overhead power line.. it was weird!

Does the Vaq have a retune button?

no retune buttons on the vaquero. also--no interference from electrical sources--i was in the middle of nowhere. i did re wrap the coil cable and will try it again--the lower and middle shaft is now dedicated to that coil as i have ordered additional shafting for my concentric coil. will also adjust and monitor the balance a bit more closely. all metal mode is very sensitive--very deep. good hunting.

Just a couple things to try if you haven't already - make sure you don't have too much cable wrapped around around the lower shaft close to the coil; also make sure your ground balance isn't set too negative. Good luck. Hope you find a quick resolution to the problem.
