Is the xterra 70 a motion or non motion detector?

It's a motion detector. You can wave a handful of dirt over the coil and it will respond to the target if it's in your hand. Those with Prospecting coils often sprinkle the soil directly onto the coil and then poke the dirt around with their finger until the target moves... and the Detector then signals the target.

Make sure you remove the rings, watches and jewelry from that hand and arm before you wave it over the coil. I have forgotten in the past. Oh, and make sure you put your wedding ring back on after detecting or your wife will wonder what you have been up to.
