 I thought I would just look for silver today ,I use the ace 250 and notched out everything below a dime . Is that the correct setting?

Deep silver will ring up lower than that. I've had very deep dimes ring up as zinc cents. In my opinion, the best way to find silver is go to a site that has some and dig everything especially iffy, jumpy signals. You would certainly find most silver buried 6 inches or less in the range you selected, though.

Consider that you will miss wheats and old coppers too.

Where are the pics?

If you're gonna do it that way-go to custom mode and notch out everything below nickel. Be sure and overlap your coil as if you were looking for a dime. I know a lot of people think that's too much, but when you get to looking for silver and deep coins you gotta take Bill's advice and overlap that coil-some may be on edge and others will be just outside of your cone of detection if they're deep. By the way- this setting in the custom mode is the STANDARD setting recommended by a lot of mfg.'s for avoiding the pesky trash while finding most rings and therefore you would have just about every sensible setting at the push of a button by setting your Ace there.

Yeah you can overlap or swing in a figure-eight pattern left to right, a narrow loop left to right, or an S pattern to pick up as much real estate as you can. If one has the patience and is determined to cover every bit of ground possible - the best way is to stand still and scan every bit of ground in front of you out to as far as you can reach then stop your coil at your farthest reach, walk up to it and start again. You'll be surprised at what you can find this way. The reason many don't score big finds is because they are in a big hurry to find that next target they think is waiting for them just a few feet away and go about scanning like they are killing snakes and walk right over a pile of goodies right under their feet. Serious detecting requires a ton of patience and perseverance. I am often guilty of being in a hurry myself but when I slow down and do it right then my finds improve greatly.

I was hunting one day like that under a tree and in about a six foot square area in front of me I pulled up $1.25. Had I been walking and scanning over that spot I might have recovered a fraction of that amount. In just a small area that day under that one tree I pulled up over $7.50. Patience and perseverance pays off.

Yeah-sorry I had to go to work this a.m. In other words all BLANK icons to the left of the Nickel icon-NOT the nickel icon, though. It's icon should be darkened or lit up with the others to the right of the nickel icon. To be honest, though, the relics mode is my favorite. But if you gotta do it the way you're talking about, this setting is safest and one recommended by most mfg.'s. And, as I say, you then have just about EVERY plausible setting programmed into the Ace for general hunting purposes and the only reason to change it would be if you just wanted to find ONE particular item out of the rest-like hunting something someone has lost and rejecting everything else that would not be in that particular screen segment.

To hunt for only one kind of metal with any detector ( except a GIT2500 ) is a waste of time and energy
let alone the chance of leaving gold rings, platinum rings, gold coins. Rolex watches, (do i need to go on ??? )
If you expect to get any where in metal detecting you have to dig it all other wise you might just as well find some
other hobby! Oh and be SURE TO FILL YOUR HOLES!!!!!!!

Yep. But some people gotta experiment. I wasted 30 years trying to find some "secret" discrimination method to avoid trash and do it the "easy" way before I found out there wasn't such a way.

In general I would say yes. But like others have said you miss a lot. But I use that setting quite a bit. Here is why. I often only have a few minutes to hunt a property. Like the other day I mixed up some 2 part floor epoxy to paint a garage floor. (I'm a remodeling contractor) It takes 30 minutes for my epoxy to activate in the can before I can start. The homeowner told me that he used to live in a house that burnt about 40 years ago. It was now a yard area about 150 feet from his newer house. I asked if I could scan around there with my detector. He said OK. So I knew there was silver there and only had about 20 minutes before I had to start painting. I ran in the so called "silver" mode. I dug several late 60's dimes and quarters them BAM! I hit a 1961 Rosie. Not rally a great find. But silver! I will definitely go back there with less and less disc to get the rest of the goodies. But for that quick "silver" hunt it's a fun way to hunt. I have used this method several times and it does work. Mostly because I see no depth reduction on the 250 when running a lot a discrimination.

I go "quartering" sometimes when I want to coinshoot for any silver colored coins except nickels. Notice I said silver colored which takes in clad. I descriminate everything out to the left of quarters on lmy ACE 250 but still get pennies, dimes and quarters. I only do this in areas where I know pretty much what's there such as around concession stands at the ball parks, etc. I am usually strapped for time too. But to hunt out parks , etc, I descriminate only iron targets and dig them all. Onus
