Hello.. after watching my father in law with his metal detector and hving being told to stop with the Extreme sports stuff, I am doing research for my first metal detector. It looks like a fun hobby!
My question is: what should a first metal detector be used? Are there any recommendations? I read the post regarding the 10 year old.
Thanks, and I hope this is the start of a new hobby and the end of the Extreme sports era in my life!

metal detecting is a fun hobby and it's good exercise too.first of all, don't buy some cheapie that won't work well as you'll only lose interest.the classifieds here are a good place to start and there are many good models to choose from.i prefer one with tone id,i really like hearing the good stuff.there are a lot of choices in the metal detector market and you may have to try a few before you find one that you really like so i personally would start with a preowned unit.i started with a used white's coinmaster and really loved it till i got my first dfx.what a difference!i don't know how i ever found anything with the coinmaster.but fact is i found a lot with the old one because i took the time to learn it so what ever you start out with stick with it till you feel you've outgrown it before you move on.the first order of bussiness is to become a good detectorist and worry about upgrading your tools later.now detecting may sound like fun but it isn't for everybody.it's not all digging silver and coppers.it's a lot of work, research and trash recovery.it takes patience and some lose interest after digging nothing but pennies and pull tabs.read the forums, ask questions and try to narrow the field down to the detectors that sound like they have what you want.take your time,a little research now will save a lot of buyers remorse later.good luck and don't forget to fill yer holes!

I would recomend a MD that has either audio of visual target ID, it will save you from digging alot of trash. There are alot of good deals on used detectors, alot of people buy one try it for awhile and either move up into a higher quality or 86 the whole idea.
Buy a good quality used one, that way if you enjoy it, you can sell it and upgrade, or if you don't like it, you can sell it and not take a huge loss.
I love this hobby, I do a little research to find old sites, put my head phones on, tune the rest of the world out and enjoy the day, plus find some cool stuff. Good Luck & Happy Hunting. TB

Scoutlion,
Buying a metal detector is just like buying a car. Some like Chevy and some like Ford, and some would have neither. Take a little time and read the adds the various MD manufacturers have on the net. Ask a few questions, and then a few more, and stick with a name brand having the features you like for the hunting you will be doing (Coin, Relic, Jewelry, Prospecting etc.) You don't have to buy the top of the line, but don't buy the cheapest either. That will be a start in the right direction (IMO)

sounds like you already have a huntin buddy to work with. The answers already posted are good ones, get what you feel comfortable with and learn it well. Patience and practice are the mainstays of this hobby and it will pay off!

My suggestion is to visit a club near your home. Ask all the questions that you can think of about Metal detecting and detector brands. You will find out that diffent detectors brands are regional in the U.S. Do not purchase a cheap detector all it will do is cause frustration. Target I.D. is nice but learning your detector is the key of successful hunting no matter what brand you get. Time and practice. You will find a lot of helpful people in the clubs and in the metal detecting hobby. Good luck.

My wife slapped me silly after my last MTB crash.
Welcome to the hobby. I would seriously look into what sort of areas you will be hunting close to home. Gold nuggets, coins, demos, parks, beaches. Start from there and move forward.
I would recommend
LAND ONLY - Explorer, Sovereign
SALT BEACH AND LAND - Sovereign
SALT BEACH only - Excalibur, Headhunter PI
GOLD NUGGETS - fisher, whites, minelab gold machines

Now Larry the Prizm 2 is one of the lowest unit White's have and it is a killer of a detector.
Sometimes low price unit can keep up with the high doller units <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> That my 2 clads input.
