It's happened to us all. (Venting.)

I had a half hour to kill and went to a nearby park that is always good for a few goodies. This is a big park and gets a lot of MD action. I know all the workers there well and they like coming to my bar and telling me about the MD activity because they know it bugs me. I never spend too much time there except for very early in the season and very late in the season because it is so close to home and if the weather turns ugly I haven't wasted too much gas.

I went to a small corner of the park where I've found some good coins and that seems to be ignored by other detectors. As I approached, I saw evidence that someone had recently been digging some huge holes. Some up to a foot across. Looks like the idiot was using a spade or a shovel. He did not sweep the removed dirt back and simply set the plug back into the hole leaving the grass looking awful. I repaired about 20 of the worst excavations and found 10 coins while doing so. I went off to look for my pal to try to get a description of the guy. It was who I thought it was. I've tried to help this a$$ out in the past and he just won't listen. He has been detecting for too long to not know how to efficiently recover coins and to be so disrespectful to the ground.

I was and am pretty irritated.

5 dimes, 2 quarters, 3 pennies in a half hour or so. No photo.

Maybe you might want to print out a few of the irrate responses from this and other websites on how these irresponsible individuals are hurting the hobby and show him what he IS LITERALLY DOING TO OTHERS (No I am not hollering at you) and shove it in his face when you see him the next time.

Maybe he will get it then!

Last year I offered to show this guy how to properly recover coins. I told him it would only aid him (he takes 5 or 10 minutes sometimes) and the park would look better. The guy said he was doing no harm to the park and I told him otherwise. I showed him all the dead clumps of sod and he said so what, it's grass. I said when the park was off limits to me because of his actions then we would have a problem. The guy is a jerk. He is also no direct competition to me because he is so slow and digs mostly iron because he doesn't know what he's doing. I hope he never expands his horizons to some of my better sites.

Chris

You should see the damage this guy does at an old home site where he doesn't even fill in his holes. A real poor representative of the hobby.

go to his house and do the same in his yard. see how he likes it.:poke:

I would say that would teach him, but I bet he already did it to his yard :ranting:

Well=I live in a small town and some outsiders have been doing this to our little parks, I have really been thinking about making a proposal to the town board that all detectorists have to buy a detecting permit and carry it with them, and make the price around $10.00, I'd even pay more to keep these people from screwing everything up for the caring people and detectorists, let alone the ones that want the parks not destroyed.:veryangry:

- - and most of the longtime GarrettGhosts here will be surprised... but report the guy for damaging public property, or creating a public safety hazard.
This is a two edged sword, as it can backfire on to you. But something must be done, and quick. He could be the cause of an outright ban, as we are seeing in some other places.

We are normally accustomed to flying under the radar, but you may have to illuminate things, in a "directed" way. Send a letter to the head parks people, and explain your point, then folllow that up with a call. Arrange to visit them and show what a good ambassador for the hobby is like. Maybe discuss the idea of a permit, as exists for most other endeavors within municipal control.
Make it abundantly clear on their level that this is a rogue.
(Try not to have it go beyond the park department, however. Too many municipal controllers involved in any issue can never be a good thing.)

Try to get their dander up and then get it directed at this guy. Assume they already know about it. Ask that they put the word out to the park employees about this cat. Get them on your side, using the same reasons they will care.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've said before, the worst thing that could happen to his hobby is it goes mainstream. There is always a bad apple in every barrel, and some people just can't be relied upon for good character.
The controllers in our lives have one solution when that is perceived - general restriction of all involved. You want to nip THAT in the bud, bud.

Smash his detector over a tree...even if it a Garrett. HA, did I say that?

Alan

I would stake out the park and take pictures of this guy as well as pictures of the damage he has caused to the grounds. Then I would post his pictures on all of the metal detecting forums, captioned: "Beware of jerk" Happy Hunting!:)

But would purchasing a permit guarantee that these people would change their character. Just buying a permit does not change a frog into a Prince. Look at drivers licenses, you have to take a test to get one yet they issue licenses to some of the worst drivers in the world because they don't see them in their every day natural state and mood.. The proper thing to do would be to ban these apes from the parks or wherever else they spread their destruction. Perhaps cut a deal with local officials to make a few responsible detectorists reserve ( non-compensated volunteer ) officers with the power to ban or cite these goons when they are caught wreaking their havoc.

Or take videos of him in action and present it to the authorities and plaster it all over the internet and turn him into an international star. HA.

Bill

We think alike bud. HA Or get some pics of him and turn them into posters and tack them on trees in every area he hunts.

Bill

It takes all kinds of people to make the world go around. Myself, I would welcome any help that would make me a better metal detector user and especially
any help getting coins out of the ground with the least amount of damage to grass. It's okay to be ignorant as long as you don't offend or cause problems for anybody besides yourself. When your actions interfere with the freedom and ability to metal detect in public parks, etc, that's just plain dumb.

I don't think metal detectors should have to pay for a permit to search in our parks, because our taxes are paying for their upkeep. Idiots who do damage should be arrested or fined for destruction of
public property. Let them pay for their irresponsible conduct, not the people who try to leave an area better than it was before they found it by removing all the trash they find and covering their holes. I can remember the concept of personal responsiblity when I was growing up and it seems to be lacking in some people.

Chris

I am with metal head and UW take a video of him "in action" and present it to the park operator (I believe you said you know him pretty well) the door is open in your favor. Nail his A$$ to the wall. Just make it clear he is who is doing the damage in the park not others. Usually the park operator will deal with it without getting bigger fish in the picture.

I used to be a park operator in several parks and I would "weed out" the trouble makers and usually set the bad eggs straight or have them banned from the park usually with a tresspass warrant (Destruction of County Property).

Good advice everybody. I talked to a local guy who is a thoughtful and respectful detector and he said he just stopped going there because there were so many novice treasure hunters there this year. Wednesday the guy was back at it and the security guard for the park came to my bar for a quickie before work. I asked him to go talk to the guy when he got to the park but he said no. I merely suggested he go over, say hi, and ask him to do a better job of covering his tracks. What's the point of having security anyway?
