I just got the SEF 10x12 myself a couple weeks ago.
So far managed to pull one indian I'd missed out of a yard I hit pretty hard last year
Also got the "penny slam" with it at a new site(large cent, flying eagle, indian, wheats, etc)
This site probably isn't a good comparison since I don't believe it's been really hunted before (except with my old garrett more than 10 years ago, and not very thoroughly then).
However:
1. The large cent gave a very clean signal, and it was a good 7-8" down.
2. I also managed part of a brass keg spigot at very good depth, I would say 10" or so (the whole X1 probe was in the hole, plus a bit)
3. Also got a old buckle (maybe 1.5x2", not terribly thick) at 10-11". That one hit a bit iffy.
That being said, it's still not the right coil for some REALLY trashy or iron-loaded areas, it's just too big to separate effectively in those conditions (note that I said effectively. I'm sure it's possible to sneak up on targets in that kind of trash from the right angle, but they're going to put up a real fight)
Not that it can't deal with trash, but that 5 foot radius around the walls of an old house where all the nails live is going to give it hell. When I tried that, the auto sensitivity got unhappy and turned things down, and I was getting a 3" air test on a junk target I put on the ground in that area.
This isn't really a minus, since I wouldn't expect ANY coil that size to perform in that kind of trash, I just figured I'd check and see if I was pleasantly surprised.
In short:
Is it a good, deep coil, better than the stock one? Absolutely.
Is is better than my excelerator 14" in terms of performance/size and weight ratio? Quite possibly.
Is it better than the excelerator 14" in terms of raw performance? That remains to be seen.
I'll be trying it on a couple of sites soon that I've hit pretty hard before, and we'll see what happens.
Where I'm hoping it does better than the excelerator is EMI tolerance. If it can deal with that better I'll be very pleased.
