Just got Explorer SE - need coil help please

I thought I would give the Explorer a try again. I bought a used SE in perfect shape but I only have the stock coil.

I want a smaller/mid size coil to use for most of my hunting. In the past I have used a Joey and it worked well.

If you could only buy one mid size coil would it be 1) Joey, 2) Sunray 8 inch, or 3) Excelarator 4.5 x 7?

Or something else?

I know there has been a lot of discussion on this topic and I did a search and looked at most of it but still can't figure out which one to try.

Thanks,

Harold

Balanced. I've found more with that coil than any other.

That's a tough question. When I bought my SE, I bought a Sunray X-5 with it. I immediately realized I needed to replace the crappy stock slimline coil and wen with a Coiltek Platypus which was a disappointment. At the same time, the Pro coil came out and I went out and got one after hearing the great reviews. I have since sold my Coiltek and now have only the Pro coil and Sunray X-5. I don't see any use for other coils unless I get a good deal on a WOT.

In your situation, your looking for a medium size coil and from what others say, the Minelab 8" and Sunray 8" seem to perform the best. I would steer clear from the Excelerator coils. The people I know that had them did not like them one bit.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Are you serious? Steer clear of the Excelerator coils!! Haven't you been reading this forum? Every person I know on here that has bought one has been raving about them and they have the finds and expertise to back it up.

Harold, I have both the x-8 and Excelerator 4.5x7. Performance is pretty close to even. What sets the Excelerator apart is the physical size. Being a DD coil it covers almost as much ground as the x-8, but it is much narrower. I absolutely love mine because with it being so narrow, it is like having two coils in one. Seven inches of coverage and 4.5 inches to stick in tight spaces. Both are very good coils. I never liked a 5 inch coil . I always felt like it was a toothpick trying to clean a wall. I don't believe a word of Excelerators being junk. The one I have is well built and find coins in junk as good as any. Just my two cents. R.L.

Hello RL,

I think I fixed a pinpointer for you a couple of years ago if you are that RL.

Anyhow you told me what I wanted to know. I was leaning towards the Excelerator and I think I will call Kellyco tomorrow and see what kind of deal I can get on one.

Thanks again,

Harold

Hi,
I have the Minelab 8" it runs very smooth goes very deep.I also have the new 11" SE Pro coil which is very nice as well. Its not hard to beat the stock slim line coil it was a pig for sure and each of the changes that I spoke of were improvements.

My buddy loves his Joey coil and used it all the time until he bought the Pro coil, now he uses it all the time, trashy areas or not. Just a thought...
