Just got my new Omega

Assembled it and played with it for about 15 minutes. Build quality is really very good, and it's a good looking machine. Very good balance. Feels a lot like the T2. Maybe a little better. It hit all the targets in my test garden that the T2, Tejon, Xterra 70 or CZ would, and I could only get the sensitivity up to about 58 due to interference. I don't really mind that for the most part, but I never had that problem with the T2. Changed frequencies and it helped a little. I'm a relic hunter and generally away from interference, so when I can crank this baby up it should be hot. I'll see how it goes and report back. Probably should read the manual too.

Glad you are liking it, mine should be here 2morow, if not i guess monday. Give us some more feedback on it if you get out this weekend!

Before you read my field report let's talk about the sensitivity range. With the stock coil you may seldom find locations where you can run sens at over 80. The user is in control to push the Omega to it's limit without runnig out of range. I had detectors where sens could be maxed out with the stock coil and I wished for more range when I put a smaller coil on the detector that was able to handle more sensitivity. With the Omega I have more sensitivity range left when Teknetics comes up with other coils. I like that.
With sensitivity at 60 the Omega had more punch as some other brand more expensive detectors and I knew I had great depth even with lower sens settings. The All Metal Mode with VDI numbers has extreme depth in mineralized soil. Watch the Fe3O4 Meter and switch to All Metal if reading is high. The punch in bad soil in All Metal has to be seen to believe !

I was invited by some WW2 relic hunter to join them on a hunt in the woods. The new Omega is the newest detector I have so I decided to give it a try.

With all the nice features I wanted to know what the Omega can do in "real world" detecting conditions.
First the weight ( or better the lack of weight ) of just about 2 pounds was somehting the other guys had never seen on a detector with a display. In the woods after hours the Omega was still fun to swing. I realised how much more one can find, because you can really hunt all day with this lightweight detector.
Next good not mentioned feature is the angle of the detector stems if you have the machine in good balance. The coil is a little more away from your feet which results in a wider left to right swing and covering more ground with each swing. Again...more ground covered in a given time means more finds.

Swing speed: You can swing the Omega fast without losing depth on deep targets. Swing a Tesoro Vaquero fast and you depth is gone....

Well...did the Omega perform ? Better than I thought ! I had to empty my pockets frequently, because of all the bullets and other stuff I found. The VDI numbers und tone ID helped a lot to leave some Iron junk in the ground. I dug some iron readings to confirm and iron was iron.
the other guys wanted to see how much punch the Omega really has, so we buried a coin at 11 inches. While some more expensive detectors had problems to pick up the coin, I was able to lift the coil 2 more inches in All Metal Mode.
Some coins came up with high VDI readings and a good feel for the size. Small target "feel" small and that is some good info to have on a target. Some large and I mean very large iron on the surface triggered the overload funktion on the Omega. Lifting the coil brought back normal VDI funktion.

After about 7 hours in the woods I was impressed how nice the whole Omega package worked for me. I looked at the machine and had a smile on my face, because I was so proud how well the machine worked with and for me. The other hunter talked a lot about my Teknetics Omega after the hunt and I bet they consider trading their detectors in for one.

I too can run the sens. at between 60 and 70 in order to avoid chatter in the disc mode (usually more towards the former) and by the way some detectors sensitivity range are set up, 60 relatively speaking might seem a little "light" but not so on the Omega. The depth the Omega gets with the stock coil while running at 60-ish sens. is VERY impressive. And as myself and several others have commented, its audio qualities are about as good as I've experienced. Once you locate a target, you can really slow the sweep speed down to a crawl and just hear a lot of nuances that give tell tale indications to what the target is which just adds to the excellent visual data. The audio isn't as clipped or choppy as what I get on several top of the line models and I really like that and this is despite the fact that the reset speed is lightening fast. When you come across a target that gives a wrap around signature, the detector actually makes a subtle "click" in the audio as it goes from the high 90's back around to the ferrous ID. And as for ID, mine actually shows an ID number(s) deeper than my T-2 especially in the AM mode keeping in mind that the T-2 does hear everything the Omega does, just with a different "language". I remember when several months ago right around the release of the Omega, Dave Johnson made what I thought was a quite conservative post about what to expect from the Omega and used the descriptive phrase "more refined". At the time, I wasn't sure just what that meant but now I know exactly what he meant and it's all good!

Good to hear more comments on the Omega. I am really watching this detector and waiting for the other coils to come out before making a decision. I hope when the coils come out there might be a combo deal offerred. I am fairly happy with my F4 but think I am missing deeper good targets. It doesn't ID in allmetal is my main complaint of the F4. I am mainly a coinshooter and think the lower frequency of the Omega vs the T2 might be an advantage. I hope with the addition of the DD coils for the Omega it might come close to matching the seperation and depth of the T2. I live in rural southeast Ga. and would like to try relic hunting sometime too. I now have a coffee jug full of clad towards a new detector and would sell either the F4 or Ace 250 when the time comes.

Even though I haven't had the Omega out relic hunting yet, a very good feature I've noticed is the tones available in the all metal mode. You can select from four different base tones, so you don't have to use the basic grunt tone if you don't want to. So far I like it better than the T2 and can see many improvements over it. And I think it's the best looking detector on the market, even though that means nothing. My air test of a dime in all metal gives me about 13.5 inches with sensitivity at 61. I couldn't do that with the T2. The user interface couldn't be better either. Now it may suck once I get it in the woods, although I doubt it. If it does I won't be shy about saying it though. Until First Texas starts sending me checks I'll have to call it as I see it.

and I can tell you without a doubt that when I took mine to the relic fields and the turf, it did suck! That is it sucked up quality targets in a manner that impressed me in some ways beyond my supposedly "better" detectors. I hope you enjoy and benefit from yours as much as I am mine!!! HH!

Thanks Brad. You're the reason I bought it so if it doesn't work worth a darn I'm holding you responsible.:yikes:
