Just what is considered falsing?

I have had my AT Pro for 2 months now and have about 35 hours on it and have found alot of clad (but no silver or gold). It has a 511 serail number. I see alot of talk about false signals but am I not sure what a false signal is. Sometimes I get a tone when I swing in one direction and not the other. Sometimes I get a few of these in a roll. And then I can move 50 or 100' away and it stops. I assume it is just junk that the AT Pro is trying to figure out what it is. And sometimes I hear a tome when brush the coil when I am swinging on high grass and the like. So I am not sure if I have a problem and just living with it or not. Any input?

Falsing is a non controllable audio produced with a detector which is common when hunting in extremely high mineralized areas, hunting near power lines both above ground and below, hunting close to someone else metal detecting or having the sensitivity set too high. Some ways to help get rid of it are to turn down the sensitivity, add some discrimination, change operating frequencies if you detector has that option, change locations or switch to a smaller coil.

I've never had a Garrett yet that didn't give a false tone when you bumped it against something..and I've got A LOT of Garretts!!

Me either. I would be more worried if it did not give a chirp when you bumped it against something. However, I can scrub the grass with no problems. I do not like to give much away for height :)

You can also get a false signal it you do the old "Pendulum Swing" instead of a nice flat swing. I see lots of guys do the old PS and wonder why the don't find much!! Another thing that will cause your machine to false is a sudden change in direction (Oooo, that looks like a good spot over there, take a quick right!!)

i get a tone when i go one way and not the other but if you look at the number on the screen on return swing it reads in the notched out 40 on down, like it was not sure the first swing over it but blocks it on return swing.not sure if thats what you are talking about.
