JW FIshers Pulse 8... any info??

Well I picked the machine, listed in the thread below, up this morning for a mere $25!! It's a JW Fishers Pulse 8, made in the 80's. It is in immaculate shape!! I called the company to request the instruction manual as that is the only item not included. It has a rechargeable NiCad battery pack, 8" solid concentric coil, Straight shaft with analog meter, divers rod, hip mounted on belt included. After talking with the service guys at JW Fishers this morning, they told me that if it is working it was an INCREDIBLE find for $25. They claim it to still be a top performer and is actually more sensitive to small objects then the newer model 8X. Parts are no longer available but electronic repairs can be made. They said it will pick up a thumbtack sized object at approx 9-10" coins and such a bit deeper. It has a 100 pulse per second rate.

Anyone have any insight into its use or in fact own one?? I could use some pointers... this is both my first waterproof machine and first PI unit...

Thanks,
Jason

Hi again fir469...I bought one in 1981 because Mel Fisher had one. I used it for a couple of years in the saltwater surfs and lagoons to chin high. It has the unique ability to see targets well outside its loop diameter when scanned in salt water deeper than.about 2 feet. Instead of using a long s pattern edge to edge, you could use a square pattern with about a 2 foot seperation, and really cover some ground. You could hear a silver dime about 10 to 18 inches deep in the lagoon, so you had to have a really good long handled scooper. It wasn't very good on gold rings so I traded it on on a Garret's Sea Hunter PI that did hear the small gold rings. Best of luck....How. .

have all ways wanted a JW.have you used it? If you have how dose it work on the small stuff .For 25 bucks you cant go wrong.

Well after charging it overnight and it not turning on again I've come to the conclusion that after 15 years of sitting the battery is shot and won't take a charge. When I get the cash next week I'll go to Batteries Plus and find a suitable replacement. Hopefully that oughta get her going. It turned on when I initially charged it for 2 hours but won't after that. The meter will spike when turned on with the charger attached so that leads me to believe the battery is shot. Will post an update when I get battery.
