Keeping a detector in a car?

KVM2

New member
I want to keep a stand by detector in my car.. There are three problems,,Heat, Theft, and Physical Damage...I have a little Toyota Matrix, and protecting a detector from all three could be a challenge, especially the heat.. Any ideas other than a huge pile of dirty laundry with the detector in the middle?

I think those pretty much keep mine from extended stays in the car. I would say if you are bent on doing it just get a small padded cases and write real big "POOP SCOOP" and I
believe no one will touch it. Also make sure you leave the battery out of it. Just use common sense on the temps you leave it in there in.

Yeah I live in AZ and in the cooler months like now I have no problem leaving them in the car with the window cracked and in the shade but in the summer heat I make sure to limit the heat exposure, as for theft my alarm is pretty good on my Jeep cherokee.

awhile back I seen where a guy made a detector case out of an old ice cooler-may help deflect heat.but people will steal any thing now adays.ya might keep a pistol probe under seat to check around small places as they can go pretty deep.just a thought

Ok for you 3 problems:

1. Heat, wrap it up with an old blanket or comforter; Good insulator.

2. Theft, wrap it up with an old blanket or comforter; Can't see whats wrapped up, right?

3. Physical Damage, wrap it up with an old blanket or comforter; prevents damage.

One simple solution is all I do as well. I have a light-weight, white blanket like they warm up at the hospital to cover patients. Keeps the sun from heating the detector as white is better than any dark blanket, detector bag or other covering. It covers the detectors while they ride on the back seat or in the back of my rig (not a pick-up bed but a padded area), keeping them both covered and safe from damage.

Theft? Well, out-of-sight helps. The dogs tend to deter some people when they are with me and that's usually at least one of them. I keep the windows up and the vehicle locked, too.

I put rain guards on car my windows. Not only do they keep the rain out, they also let me keep the windows cracked about an inch and half on hot days without anyone knowing that they're cracked. Cracked windows keep a car a whole lot cooler. Heck, I keep my windows cracked on hot days even when I don't have a metal detector stored in the car, so I don't have to suffer getting into a hot car. Also parking in a shade helps. Light colored cars stay cooler than dark ones do. That why my car is white.:)
