Well I decided I was hunting today...RAIN OR SHINE because I took it off from work. I just got back about an hour or so ago.
Sunday I was talking with a family at church and they gave me the nod to hunt their yard which is a pretty nice sized property. It isn't very old...built in the early 1950's...but they said they used to hold big gatherings there when they were kids. I figured there might be some silver there and boy was I right. It wasn't old silver...but silver is SILVER...and I'll take it. :wiggle:
There was tons of trash in the yard. Everything from pulltabs to can slaw...to a lot of broken wire pieces. It seemed to me that the silver was pretty deep for 50's silver....7" to 8"...and it was right in the midst of the trash...but easily distguinguished itself from the garbage with a nice high tone. I plugged along "low and slow" and after 4 hours...had 6 silver coins in the pouch along with 12 wheaties.:bouncy:
Another neat find on the day was the Eisenhower dollar and the Kennedy Half in the same hole. Talk about a rush...I don't care if it wasn't silver...it was really cool to plop the half out of the plug...then probe again and hear it sing...then plop out the big dollar coin. :yo:
After about 4 hours the old neighbor guy from accross the street comes walking over and I'm thinkin' ...Great...he's seen the earings...long hair...and tattoos....and he thinks somethin's "goin' down" in his neighbor's back yard.:crylol: So I paused...took the earphones off and prepared to be hassled. Boy was I wrong. He was just curious as to what if any coins I was finding. He then proceeded to tell me his house was much older...built around 1900..and that his side of the street was all from that era. I guess they hadn't cleared off the land for development on the side I was hunting on until the 50's. He then gave me the nod to hunt his yard...yippee! :thumbup:I agreed to give him the first silver coin I dug...IF I dug any...just so he would have a momento...and he was thrilled.
He was really excited now and asked if he could tag along with me and see how the SE worked and watch me retrieve things from his yard...and that was fine with me.
Only had an hour left to hunt by the time I ventured into his yard but I made the most of it. Found ONLY two coins in his yard...but what do you think the first coin I dug was??.....a Key Date 1905 O Barber dime!!:surprised: :yikes: Why couldn't the FIRST silver coin I found be a 1945 MERC OR SOMETHIN' ELSE?? :surrender: Well...a deal's a deal and a Christian's word is his word...so I plopped it in his hand ...and his face lit up. He then told me I could come back ANY time and keep any and all coins I found. Just goes to show you "What goes around comes around"...hey it's tattooed on my arm. The barber was wedged in a hard sand/gravel mix in the yard which was strange...and hence has a light but wide, noticeable surface scratch between the ear and eye...and it runs from the hair down to almost the chin..oh well! It came out of the ground looking mint other than the blemish on the face...but upon closer inspection...none of the liberty is readable at all on the head...so it would be a VG-F coin at best anyway even though it looks nicer. The back is very nice though. Even though it was his coin now... I found it...and It just urked me to see the wide blemish down the face... but it was wedged in gravel for 100 years so what can I expect? About 1/2 hour later I popped out an 1882 Injun. Before leaving I asked him if I could take the dime home and scan it so I could post it...then return it to him...and he was fine with that.
Somewhere down the road I'll probably try and pick one up from a coin show or dealer. It doesn't even have to be as nice as the one I found...just so I have one for my finds collection. I have never collected or bought any coins. I just love detecting and finding silver coins and collect ONLY what I find. From 30 years of hunting......I have a wheatie collection...a Merc collection...and a Barber dime collection. Heck I could probably pick one up for $20 to $25 and it was worth every cent to see the look of amazement on the old fellow's face when I set it in his hand.
All in all it was a very nice 5 hour hunt and I got me seven silver coins including the 1905 O Barber dime...an 1882 Injun...12 wheaties...and the IKE dollar along with the Kennedy half.....AND I made a new unexpected friend who gave me permission to hunt there again. :clapping:

Nice Barber and a key date, but you honored what you would do in hunting his yard and I can tell you right now, our Lord will bless you with another key-date coin at sometime while hunting! Because you kept your word, this man will remember you, as he shows it to others which will probably get you more older yards to hunt and find old silver coins! By doing good to others it returns good to you......do bad to others and the bad will return to you! What goes around, comes around good or bad!

Congrats on the silver and finding a Clad $ and 1/2 $ in the same hole would have thrilled me too! I always liked finding more than one coin in a hole! Really makes the day of :detecting: worth while and also getting outdoors whether rain or shine! Do you have your detector covered from the rain? Mine got wet one time and the batteries started corroding! I try to keep a small plastic bag over my meter and carry an extra larger one or two to cover the detector from the rain until I can get to my car when I did hunt a lot!

Detectors and rain don't mix too well! I never had a water detector to use instead!

God Bless

Bryce, that is a terrific post! Wow, you sure lucked out getting permission to hunt two neighborly yards.

Congratulations on the great finds; that Barber is a beauty.....and I'm telling you right now, you will find more of those in the future...God will help you because you were so true to your word with this elderly gentleman.

I like those "wheaties " and the "IH" and the.....oh boy! I like 'em all Bryce!! :clapping:

great detecting story!

You night have been the only Jesus he has seen. Hope you get back there soon and get to do more detecting and some seed planting too.

If I wasn't at church...I don't think I would have had the courage to ask the first people to hunt their yard.

no sprinkles are gonna hold me back:detecting:
I do have a rain cover on my SE...but I also have used a plastic bag to cover everything too. when that happens...I dig tartgets according to sound only...like the "old" days.

First congrats on a great day! I wanted to tell you that about 4 years ago, I found a 1905 micro O barber dime that is in EF40 condition! It is one of my better more valuble coins. Is yours a micro also? I was actually able to see mine next to a regular one at our club meeting when I found mine. There is a very noticeable difference. Did ya think about offering him a choice on that older indian? He might like that better? :) Congrats on a great day my friend!

micro coin to compare it to...but I'm probably better off NOT knowing if it was a micro O:crylol: Oh ya'...by the way...the thought of pulling the "old switcheroo" with another dime before I returned it...never crossed my mind:bouncy: ..Seriously though...I dug it and that's what counts. It felt good being able to scan it...post it...then give it back to him. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

would not do that, and neither would I. But I wouldn't feel bad asking if he would like the indian as a choice? It is older. :)

Hey, you showed your true self by sticking to your word. I think that these kinds of things are tests from god. And you passed!!!

Great song!

I have to admit I was thinking about that some last nite before I went to bed. This morning I feel pretty good though and pretty much at peace. I really am glad I don't know whether or not is was a micro. Take care bro.

I was only there an hour....I think there is more to be had. The old guy said I could hunt any time...even if he wasn't there. He was really informative and happy to share info.
