facts; in the 1750s a force of 500 Spanish soldiers was sent from San Antonio,to a place now known as Spanish fort Texas.the force had two cannons and some Indian guides.what they didn't know was that the Indian village had 2500 residents and 85 french fur traders.the traders had supplied the Indians with muskets and had even trained a Calvary unit.when the Spaniard arrived they were soundly defeated, lost most of their horses and had one of the cannons used against them.Legend-- as they were retreating they came upon a small lake beside the red river and threw the remaining cannon and anything that would slow them down into the water.this is a seasonal lake in that it has water in it when the rivers up and stays dry most of the time.this brings us to 1952 when a local farmer was plowing the edge of the lake bed when his plow flipped up a small three foot long cannon and some silver coins.this set off a major treasure hunt.My dad and his friends would go to the lake after church and take metal pipes with them. They would drive these into the ground with a sledge hammer ,attempting to hit something metal. Before long the whole lake looked like a porcupine, with all the pipes sticking in it.you cant hardly remove a pipe after you drive it three feet deep.If you go to Spanish fort Texas on a satellite map you will see this lake straight up from the site of the old town.If some of the modern detectors could work around the iron and go deep who knows what they might find.hope i didn't bore anyone with this story.
