Larger coil?

Sanderling

Member
Most of my detection is on the beach. I have the stock dd coil. Some of the of the fellow detectorist use large coils. Asking you other beach bums what the advantage is, other than scanning a larger area. Considering investing in one. What are some of the good ones out there? Pluses minuses of a larger coil. How about pinpointing? Appreciate any feedback.

The SEF coils....WOT coils and S-12 coils work great for Beach combing. The Larger coils give better depth and coverage....... but on the negative side they add weight to your safari which can be a issue if you like to Beach hunt for long periods of time. Good luck

I have a 17" coil for my CTX and agree with all the above. Personally, I think it pinpoints as well as the stock 11" on the CTX or my Safari. If it gets to be too much weight for too long, look into a good harness. A good one that's properly adjusted makes swinging a large coil a one fingered pleasure.

With the wot coil, yes you will notice the difference in weight, but they are a popular coil on the beach, so if you are not in bad physical shape a person should be able to handle one ok. They are 15 inches and cover the ground faster and go noticeably deeper than stock. With the s-12 and 12 inch sef coils I don't even notice the difference in weight compared to stock.

I've tried the 15 inch WOT (Wonderful Orange Thing)!!.....for a long time, I wondered what the initials 'WOT' stood for! I have tried the slimline and even went with the much heavier 18x15 inch thinking I could go deeper and cover more ground but found that was way too heavy. I have thought seriously in the past about getting a carbon coil. They go up to and maybe bigger? than 30 inch's and are super light weight but haven't purchased one.
I have always come back to the stock DD 11 inch. I have 2 kinds of m.d. harnesses....the Buddy and another, but still like to swing without any assistance from a harness. Out on a warm/hot beach, I don't care for belts etc; around me.
I would agree with O.L. about the WOT going a little deeper as that was also my experience with it, but at the end of the day, I personally find the stock coil adequate for me. I just hope I'm not loosing too many finds by sticking with a smaller coil for the beach!!!
I'm only a young 63 years young, but as the years go by (I hope very slowly)! maybe I will have to wear a harness to support the weight of my detector/coil and can go back to the WOT coil as that would be my preference after the stock coil:thumbup:

Thanks again. One of the fellow detectorists has the WOT and highly recommended it. I do have some physical limitations due to an accident, but it is more of a problem with crouching down or getting on my knees, thus I prefer the beach as it is easier to dig. I don't think I will need a harness quite yet, but those that have one really like them. Looks a little cumbersome to me. Goldstrike I am one year behind you and hope to have many years left to detect. I doubt that you are missing much with the stock coil. I believe I find as many coins and rings and the next guy. As my wife points out, the real treasure is being able to get out and do this at all.

MoSafari, why do you like the S-12 over the sef 10x12? Also, the two coils I mentioned are only 1" bigger than the stock coil, so the extra ground coverage isn't going to be much, so what's the advantage over the stock coil?

Old Lobo,

That's a great question. I like the S-12, because I have had it longer. I just got the 10x12 a short time ago, and have not been able to get out to hunt with my Safari, much less even try the 10x12 out.

I hear a lot of good things about the 10x12. I have a S-5 and the S-12. I really wanted the S-8 to round the Sunray collection out.

Then, reading here and in other forums, some folks think that if you have the 8x6, it probably does the job and getting the S-8 would be a bit overkill and added expense in relation to performance.

Do you have an opinion on the S-8, becuase since I like the S-5 so much, I keep wondering if the S-8 be "just what I need." :)

Thanks for any opinion on the mattere of aleady having am 8x6 and really "needing" the S-8.

Anyone use the 10X5 Joey coil ? It seems it may do a little better In trash and not lose much coverage.
Have you noticed how the stock coil hits the target 3 times in one sweep ?
Outside ring picks it up then the middle and outside again. Would the 10X5 eliminate this ?

ime, hitting a target 3 times on a swing happens only on surface or VERY shallow targets. ones that a pinpointer will pick up. when it get that, I sweep the area near the middle beep with a horizontal PPer to locate the target.

I very much doubt that it wouldn't do the same 3beep thing. I've seen the same effect on my 6x8 SEF. But I don't have the coil in question, so take that fwiw.

Decided on a 15" SEF coil that was on sale. Just got it and looking forward to using it on the beach tomorrow. It is a bruiser, glad I did not get anything bigger. Thanks all for your valuable input.

I think youre gonna love it. I was planning on the 15"SEF for my Safari before a deal on my CTX+17" came along. It may take you a while to adjust your swing for the new balance point + remember that a good harness can make a lot of difference in the extra weight/bulk. I get about 2 hours of hunting on my 17" before I have to put it down, but with my homemade harness (modeled after the Minelab one), I can easily go 7 hours without noticing its even there.

Let us know what you think of it!
