Larger Mono coil any good on LS?

Sandmagnet

New member
Anyone used the 10x14 mono on the LS in salt water? Is it still sensitive to small gold and worth the extra drag? The 8" mono is a great coil, just looking for more coverage. Need inputs! Sandmagnet

Yes, I use the 14" mono, I've only used it a few times in the water as I only started going in the water near the end of last summer. It's esy to swing under water, drag is not a problem for me, it's got less drag than the standard coil. On a calm day it's quiet, but as waves go past, it really squeels, so I turn the threshold down to between 2 and 3, that way I can lower the disc to around 2 -ish. Because of having to decrease the overall sensitivity, you loose performance but I'm not sure how much. It's really hard to tell how much depth and sens you loose underwater, but I have dug $2 coins at around 8" that gave a loud signal, and I've dug small rubbish with it as well, though close to the surface.

What do you mean by small gold? I doubt you'll be picking up (plain) chains with it, even in the wet sand.

What I mean by small gold is small ladies rings, gold earrings, chains etc. I've been impressed with the 8" finding some aluminum and tiny metal at good depths. Just wondering if the 10"x14" mono can do the same or will I lose sensitivity and walk over items. I would like to cover more area, but not lose performance. Sandmagnet

I doubt the 14" mono will find small earings, I havent found anything really small with it. But then again, my beaches are heavily searched, I have found small stuff with it but not what I would classify as really small. Sorry if I can't give you a precise answer but it's hard to tell.
