Larry...do you find you can now ID a lot of iron targets with the GQSS ??

i can tell bobby pins and nails somtimes but i always think its a chain so i jest try to dig all
other than that sometimes i skip targets if im tired thinking its jest a nail or bobby pin with the double beep but it depends on how long ive been hunting sometimes i jest leave a deep target cause dont want to dig that deep or i use the old reverse discrimination method on the deep ones but if im hungry ill pretty much dig it all im usually suprised as to what i dig up so can you tell by the audio sounds i know bottle caps come in really loud even if the mediam deep or pieces of iron but then again a good size ring will to so what tyo do dig or guess hummmmm!!!!! hh larry ca

Larry,
It's certainly not something I've perfected but I find that I can exclude a percentage of initial audio sounds if they fall under certain "parameters".
I posted a reply to Swansea Jack on the 30th May 2004 regarding "what works for me" in target discrimination with the GQSS. It's by no means perfect but it does allow me some target rejection right at the start.
As always, there are environmental/operator/detector variables that will come into play that may have adverse effects on someone's success in all of this.

I don't think to enough consideration is paid to the audio output of different headphones with P.I. and tone discriminating V.L.F. machines. I had a headphone failure yesterday and had to fall back on a pair of phones with a built in limiter and I could not I.D. anything before digging which made for a very hard days work.

Brian,
You know you're right, headphones are another metal detecting "variable" which could help/hinder someone to ID a target.
I have to admit, I haven't given headphones much thought in this area. I use the Grayghost Underwater model and I find the audio very descriptive. Because they are hardwired into my GQ, I'm not really able to try out other headphones. They do seem to suit me well though.

Sorry I haven't replyed to say thanks for your very in depth reply. Been having one of my DIY episode and have lost track of things. Same applies to the Welsh Flag. I have read your reply a few times. Decide the best way forward is to take a copy of your reply with me to the beach. If I can hear what your describing it might make more sense to me Thanks again!

Hi Tony
I have Greyghosts (Ultimates) and tend to use them more than other makes because of the comfort angle. Switch the limiter on on them though and again I'm back to digging everything.
Re the Swansea and Gower area I've had 14 rings over the last three days + a couple of watches so there is still plenty of stuff to be found although the stripping of the sand last year lead to an emptying out of the usual productive spots.

Got to greedy and was on the beach at seven this morning. Result for five hours detecting....one plated ring and dozens of ringpulls (squareish, bright gold coloured that sound and look just like gold). Day off from detecting tomorrow to give the blisters time to heal.

Had my first gold ring today with the Gold quest. Still dug a load of crap but hell who care's. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

And the audio signal from the ring should have sounded smooth and sweeeeeeeeet <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
A lot of the junk you dug up should have sounded off as junk.
I've actually got a test bed at home that I practice on. I'll get someone to bury some good targets and some junk targets to see if I can ID them.
One thing I will say is that I very rarely have a "junk" audio signal that turns out to be a nice gold ring or even a coin.
Tony.
