Last 2 hunts with the 5x8 coil

Greetings fellow hunters, its been awhile since I posted anything worthy. Been super busy at work and haven't found much time to hunt. I got out on Saturday the 6th for a nice 3 hour hunt at the pounded park. I started off in an area that I've hit before. Its extremely mineralized and trashy. Iron litters the whole hillside and it is very common to find multiple pieces of iron in the same hole as a goodie. I decided to use the 5x8 coil and see if I could cherry pick anything good. After about an hour of hunting, all I had was the 2 buttons and the Buff. The buff came in at a textbook 52 on the screen at 3 inches. I was very surprised it was a buff as I called out a Jefferson before I dug it, lol. I packed up my gear and headed toward the entrance of the park.

I arrived at the entrance of the park and decided to again hit an area I've hit before, this time with the 5x8 coil again. This area is a little bit more flat and wide open and the trash isn't too bad, but there is electrical interference. I slowly worked a straight line from the entrance to where I parked. I came across a nice low 80's signal at 6". It was directly underneath a large tree root. It sounded so good that I tried my best to dig it out unscathed, but I was unsuccessful. I was however rewarded with a nice scratched Merc. I filled in the hole and made a right turn towards some eroded areas near some big trees. I always have a very high success rate in these areas. I came across one of those pesky underground power lines. I usually walk away, but I decided to follow the line and work both sides of the line to see if any previous hunters (me included) missed anything. Then it happened, I got a 75 - 76 penny signal at 3". I immediately said out loud here comes the Zincoln... I dug a small plug with my hand digger and after I flipped the plug, I seen a large round disk on edge. I greedily plucked the large coin and determined it was a worn KG copper. I can barely see the outline of a head on the front side, back side is smooth with the exception of the letters NIA which I'm assuming is Britannia. After finding a 1700's copper, I would've stopped hunting then and there, but I said to myself, why quit early and ruin a good hunt? I'm glad I stuck it out as I stumbled upon a choppy 2" 78 - 79 signal. I thought it was going to be a memorial, but again I was wrong and was rewarded with the 1905 Injun. I thought I had hunted this area pretty good before, but I obviously missed this coin. I decided to grid the immediate area to see what else I missed. I then came across a nice soft silver tone. It was reading 76 on the screen, but it just had that silver tone. Very soft and quiet. I dug a 4" plug, flipped it over and seen the edge of what I thought was a coin. I grabbed it and the dirt fell off in the middle revealing a nice .925 silver ring with a nice little heart shaped stone. Cool! It was starting to get dark, so I decided to call it a day.

I managed to get out today for a nice 90 minute hunt. I went back to where I found the Buff and buttons and decided to again use the 5x8 coil. This time I decided to drop the sensitivity a few notches lower from where I usually run it to see if I could cut down on some of the chatter. It seemed to work pretty well. I slowly hunted the hillside and came across a textbook silver dime signal. It was ringing up 82 - 83 every time, when I turned 90 degrees and isolated the signal it would bounce from 80 - 86, but I knew it was silver. A few inches away from it was a very large iron signal, so I was hoping this wasn't the edge of a large nail or something. I dug a very wide plug around the silver signal. Popped the plug and ran the pro-pointer in the hole, nothing there. I then ran it over the plug and got a hit. I slowly dug down in the plug with my finger and popped out the 1923 Merc. Sweet! I love it when I can call a find before I dig it. This makes my 50th silver coin find for the year.

It was starting to get pretty cold and dark, and as I walked towards my truck I came across another 80 - 83 signal. I figured it was a memorial as it was pretty shallow. The pro-pointer gave a response on the surface of the ground so I had my doubts about an oldie. I took my digger and gently removed the top 1" of soil to be rewarded with the 1924 Wheatie. Only other coin I dug today was a clad dime. I love finding more old coins than new coins. I hope to be able to get out one more time before the big freeze to maybe get my 51st silver coin. HH! :detecting:

Very Nice finds indeed. Looks like that coil is doing it's magic for you. Considering you haven't been hunting as of late, you sure made up for lost time.

great job Eric. I especially appreciated the description of your thought process. Keep those posts coming - I'm only a few hundred miles away but the ground is frozen here so I won't be able to get out until march or april.
